1. He was a conceited monster. Never for a moment did he look at the world or at people, except in relation to himself. To himself, he was not merely the most important person in the world; in his own eyes he was the only person who existed. He considered himself to be one of the greatest playwrights in the world, one of the greatest thinkers, and one of the greatest composers. If you hear him talk, it seems as if he were the mixture of Shakespeare, Beethoven, and Plato. And you have no trouble in hearing him talk. He was one of the most exhausting conversationalists that ever lived. An evening spent with him was an evening spent listening to a monologue. At times, he was brilliant, at other times, he was annoyingly tiresome. But whether he was brilliant or dull, he had only one topic of conversation: himself, what he thought and what he did. 2. He thought arrogantly that he was always in the fight. The slightest hint of disagreement, from anyone, on the most trivial point, was enough to set him off on a harangue that might last for several hours, in which he proved himself right in so many ways, and with such exhausting
volubility, that finally his hearer, stunned and deafened, would agree with him, for the sake of peace.

If I Were the Mayor of This City
The city in which I live is my favorite because I have been living here for 13 years. I have become used to the climate and the way of living here. Of course, it is far from perfect. It is faced with many problems, among which water pollution and car accidents are the major problems to be solved.
If I had the good luck of becoming the mayor of this city, I wouldn't look on when faced with the major problems mentioned above. The water in some rivers and lakes is very dirty because a large amount of waste water from chemical plants flows into them before being purified. Considering this, I would propose that some sewage treatment plants be built so that sewage water could be disposed of before flowing into rivers and lakes. As for car accidents, I propose making laws calling on citizens to obey safety regulations and prohibiting drivers from drunken driving.
If our city could get rid of water pollution, the water in rivers and lakes would be cleaner than before. Fewer fish would die in rivers and lakes. If car accidents could be kept under control, people's property and safety would be guaranteed. As long as every citizen makes efforts, our city is bound to become one of the cleanest and the most civilized cities in our country.
