My wife passed away a few years ago, and I went through the worst time in my life. I even wanted to kill myself. Just for my kids, I had to continue to live and work as a small town doctor at my medical clinic in Hawaii. My kids had gone to live on the mainland, and I was alone. Then they asked me to have a family trip.
On our trip, we turned on the TV at the motel and saw the second plane crash into the World Trade Center. Seeing it falling down, I said to my kids: “I'm going to Afghanistan.” And a few weeks later, International Medical Corps sent me to set up 20 clinics in provinces where people had no health care. These field clinics surrounded by frightening shoots or deadly bombs, we were eventually serving 27,000 patients a month in a very busy schedule. Tired and nervous, I gradually had a sense of achievement, a sense of purpose, and my depression went away. In the years to follow, I went to Indonesia after the tsunami(海啸), Pakistan after the earthquakes, Sudan after the civil war, and Iraq after more and more bombs. Each time after disasters one after another, hundreds of people were killed, wounded and many more had to flee. We once set up movable clinics in an area with 19,000 refugees, and it was supposed to hold 13,000 originally. Flu broke out, one of the biggest killers of kids in refugee camps, and it spread like wildfire. Water and food were also serious problems. “Adventures or not?” I often asked myself.
When my wife passed away, I thought my life was done. But in reality, it was just getting started. At the end of her life, she went unconscious. I held her head in my hands and told her of all the places we would visit and the exciting adventures we would have.
I think about the moment many times during my “adventures”. I didn't know how predictive those words would be. But I know that she is still with me. 60. Where has the doctor been in the past few years?
A. Some countries where he could set up clinics. B. The places where the horrible disasters struck. C. Some African countries where flu broke out. D. The places where the earthquakes happened.
61. How would the doctor describe his life after he had worked in Afghanistan?

In the near future,we may be using our eyes to operate our smart-phones and tablets, even when it comes to playing popular games like Fruit Ninja.
The Gaze Group has been developing eye-controlled computer technology for nearly 20 years. But those devices have been firstly designed to help those with disabilities, and are very expensive.
“After a while,we figured out that probably the best way is to go for a mass-market way,” says Gaze’s Sune Alstrup Johansen.“where everybody would have this available.\
Johansen and some of his colleagues have formed a new company, the Eye Tribe, which is hoping to develop the technology on a mass commercial level.
The technology works with the help of the computing device toward the user’s face. After making sure of the user’s eye movements, the technology is then able to easily find where a person’s eyes are moving, and then allow the eyes to control a cursor(光标).
“Our software can then determine the location of the eyes and know where you’re looking on the screen to make sure what you’re looking at,” reads an explanation on the Eye Tribe site.
There has been a gradual change toward hands-free technology in recent years, particularly in the gaming world. Recently Xbox released the Kinect device, which lets users control their Xbox and play certain games using only their hands, legs and voices. But still, most of these devices have been more of a gimmick than a practical way to use one’s hands to control a mobile device. Johansen said a replaceable filter(滤光器)would be a cheap, convenient way for most consumers.
And even as companies like The Eye Tribe work to create such a product for the average user, making the eye-controlled technology more accessible and less expensive will have similar benefits for physically disabled users.

Cheating is nothing new. But today, education and administrations are finding that examples of academic dishonesty on the part of students have become more frequent—and are less likely to be punished—than in the past. Cheating appears to have gained acceptance among good and poor students alike.
Why is student cheating on the rise? No one really knows. Some blame the trend on a general loosening of moral values among today’s youth. Others have attributed(归因于) increased cheating to the fact that today’s youth are far more practical than their idealistic ancestors. Whereas in the late sixties and early seventies, students were filled with visions about changing the word, today’s students feel great pressure to survive and succeed. In interviews with students at high schools and colleges around the country, both young men and women said that cheating had become easy. Some suggested they did it out of hate for teachers they didn’t respect. Others looked at it as a game. Only if they were caught, some said, would they feel guilty. “People are competitive,” said a second-year college student named Anna, from Chicago. “There is an potential fear. If you don’t do well, your life is going to be ruined. The pressure is not only from parents and friends but from yourself. To achieve, to succeed, it’s almost as though we have to surpass people to achieve our own goals.
Edward Wynne, editor of a magazine blames the rise in academic dishonesty in the schools. He claims that administrators and teachers have been too hesitant to take action. Dwight Huber, chairman of the English Department at Amarillo sees the matter differently, blaming the rise in cheating on the way students evaluated. “I would cheat if I felt I was being cheated,” Mr. Huber said. He feels that as long as teachers give short-answer tests rather than essay questions and rate students by the number of facts they can memorize rather than by how well they can combine and process information, students will try to beat the system. “ The concept of cheating is based on the false belief that the system is legal and there is something wrong with the individual who’re doing it,” he said, “That’s too easy an answer. We’ve got to start looking at the system.”
68. Educators are finding that students who cheat________. A. have poor academic records B. use the information in late years C. can be academically weak or strong
D. are more likely to be punished than before
69. Which of the following statements reflects the information in the passage?
A. Only the educational system and administrators are to blame for the rise in the cheating. B. The pressure students faced with is partly the reason causing the student cheating. C. The 1960s vision of changing the world helped students never make mistakes.
D. Punishment for cheaters has always been severe in this country.
70. The underlined phrase “the individuals” refers to _________. A. students who practice cheating
B. parents who put pressure on their children.
C. school administrators who approve of short-answer tests. D. teachers who are too hesitant to take action against cheating.
71. The author probably would agree with the point of view that _________. A. students who cheat should be driven out of school
B. parents alone must take responsibility for the rise in student cheating C. the educational system is sound, students must follow every rule
D. the educational system in this country would benefit from a thorough evaluation

31st October——A team of British explorers has announced they are going to the North Pole to measure the ice cap’s thickness. The exploration will take ground-based readings (仪表的读数) of an ice formation which most scientists agree is shrinking at an alarming rate.
Explorer Pen Hadow’s three-member team will pull a sled-fixed radar device, which measures ice density every eight centimeters, 2,000 kilometers across the Arctic and will produce millions of readings.
They will leave in February, 2008 and will face temperatures of -50℃ on a journey that will take up to 120 days. They have been testing their equipment in Britain and Canada.
Hadow is excited about the prospects, “For the first time we will be able to transmit video images — webcam(网络摄像机) film of the expedition — as it unfolds so people can track us, and the whole idea is to engage as many people as we can in what we’re doing.”
New fallen snow on top of the ice makes ground-based measurements more accurate than satellite data.
“It has been in the planning stage for a while,” said Hadow. “We spent the last two years developing impulse radar (冲击雷达), which normally is about 100 kilograms and hangs under an aircraft and so on. We’ve managed to get it down to about 4 kilograms. It’s the size of a briefcase and we are dragging it behind the sled as we go.”
The ice cap shrank enough in 2007 so that a pathway through the cap known as the Northwest Passage opened up during the melting of the Arctic summer.
Cambridge University’s Joao Rodrigues explains, “Thickness of the ice cap will determine how much solar radiation will be reflected and the heat exchange between the ocean and the atmosphere and it is thus a vital component (成分) of climate models.”
If warming trends continue, some experts predict that the Arctic Ocean could be ice-free during the summer within a few decades. 72. What is special about the exploration? A. It will be broadcast live on the Internet. B. Explorers will use a sled-fixed radar device.
C. Explorers will travel in extremely cold conditions. D. Ground-based measurements are more accurate. 73. What is the purpose of the exploration?
A. To study whether ice will disappear in the Arctic.
B. To measure the ice cap’s thickness.
C. To make a film about the Arctic exploration.
D. To make people interested in what they are doing. 74 It can be inferred from the passage that ________. A. ice in the Arctic will disappear in ten years B. the exploration will last for half a year
C. Hadow spent two years developing a kind of radar, which is about 100 kilograms
D. if there is snow on ice, satellites can’t measure the ice thickness accurately enough
75. From the passage, we learn that ________.
A. the explorers will measure ice density every other centimeter
B. people will be able to follow the explorers and see what they are doing C. people could go through the Northwest Passage in the 2007 Arctic summer D. the equipment that Hadow’s team use will be tested in the United States

As is shown in the survey, all the teenagers have been ,to some extent ,involved in the online shopping, which demonstrates the irresistible influence of the Internet. In my view, the Internet is a double-edged sword which may prove fatal, if not properly dealt with. Moreover, it is the popularity of the Internet that cries for immediate regulations and standards which are sure to protect teenagers ---- the future of our country.
写作二(满分20分) Dear Sir or Madam,
I’m a student from Chenguang Middle School. Recently, with reports of square dance frequently appearing in news media, square dance has become the focus of attention due to the continuous complaints from local residents. Then what should we do with it?
Forbidding it is definitely not a good idea. Square dance, whose participants are mainly middle-aged or elder women, undoubtedly provides a very good exercise for them. However, the opponents say square dance does seriously affect their life for its loud music, or rather, noise. What’s worse, they can hardly find any place to relax because square dance usually occupies the whole square.
To crack this hard nut, I think mutual understanding and communication is a must. Besides, the government could build a “square dance park” to reduce its influence on others. I believe square dance could develop better with our joint efforts.
Thank you for your attention and I’m looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely, LiMing
