1. Of all the physiological differences in human sleep compared with wakefulness that have been discovered in the last decade, changes in respiratory control are most dramatic. Not only are there differences in the level of the functioning of respiratory systems, there are even changes in how they function.

2. During NREM (the phase of sleep in which there is no rapid eye movement) breathing becomes deeper and more regular, but there is also a decrease in the breathing rate, resulting in less air being exchanged overall.

3. First, there may be a brief cessation or reduction of breathing when falling asleep as the sleeper waxes and wanes between sleep and wakefulness and their differing control mechanisms . (找到 “just before NREM sleep begins” 了吗?)

4. It takes twice as much effort to breathe during sleep because of greater resistance to air flow in the airways and changes in the efficiency of the muscles used for breathing.(明白为什么“inhalingis like sucking air out of a balloon”了吗?)

5. This reflexive adjustment is totally absent during NREM sleep. Only after several inadequate breaths under such conditions, resulting in the considerable elevation of carbon dioxide and reduction of oxygen in the blood, is breathing effort adjusted.

6. Finally, the coughing reflex in reaction to irritants in the airway produces not a cough during sleep but a cessation of breathing. If the irritation is severe enough,a sleeping person will arouse, clear the airway, then resume breathing and likely return to sleep. (到哪里去找 “a very mildirritation”呢?)

7. The amount of air exchanged is even lower in REM than NREM because, although

breathing is more rapid in REM, it is also more irregular, with brief episodes of shallow breathing or absence of breathing.

A study in the journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment notes that reflected light--off of buildings or roadways--can be as disruptive to animal behavior as the direct light that attracts sea turtle hatchlings to begin life in the wrong direction. Adam Hinterthuer reports

Man-made light sources can really throw animals for a loop. Moths can't tear themselves away from lightbulbs, and newly hatched sea turtles often shun moonlit oceanwaves for the bright lights of inland cities. But a study in January's issue of the journal Frontiers in Ecology and the Environment says direct light sources are only part of the problem. Light that reflects off shiny urban surfaces, like roads, parking lots and buildings, has an equally devastating power to attract. That's because such polarized light means one thing to most animals—water. For example insects like dragon flies make nocturnal flights to lay their eggs using horizontally polarized light as a beacon. That light might bring them to a stream or pond, but a well-lit interstate is equally alluring. If enough insects lay eggs on the road instead of in the water, the entire food web can be disrupted. But there are ways to dim our influential lights, the scientists say. Bugs are less attracted to roadways with white hatch marks on the pavement. And light-colored curtains can keep birds from slamming into dark buildings. Simple fixes, really, to keep basic instincts from turning into fatal attractions. —AdamHinterthuer

I do not think schools should require students to wear uniforms. First of all, I believe students are born to have freedom to decide what they wear every day. If the universities are looking for candidates with unique qualities, the university should encourage students to wear their own clothes to show their personalities. So I my opinion, as long as the students are wearing their own clothes under some dress code such as shirt with collars and sleeves, it should be totally OK for students to wear their own clothes to go to school.

I strongly support the statement. Requiring Students to wear school uniforms helps them focus on study. For this requirement, students won’t buy too much new clothes or thinking about which one to wear every morning. With less concern about beautiful dress or skirt, students would spare more time and energy on their courses. What’s more important, affordable and comfortable school uniforms can avoid unnecessary comparison among students. For example, no one would be allowed to show off her expensive Chanel dresses to her friends.

Young people should take several different jobs beforetaking

a career in a long term.

Young people should take several different jobs before taking a career in a long term.

It takes quite a bit of time for college graduates to figure out what career fits them best. Job hopping in the first few years of their career pursuit is normal, even necessary.

An 18-year-old high school graduate is often too young to have an accurate judgment of his passion, potential, and above all, of the demand in the job market. It is no wonder that at least five out of ten students fail to specialize in the right subject that guarantees their career success. Unfortunately, fresh out of college, most of them are so much ingrained in the conventional wisdom of matching occupation to academic major. Students often feel their four years of college study are wasted when they fail to work in a position directly related to their

area of study, so their first few jobs are usually closely associated with their major. After some time, only when they realize it does not work out will these youngsters be determined to abandon their original field of study and come to a more rational way of making career decision. Now old enough to have a careful consideration of one’s inner values, interests, skills, as well as one’s life pursuit, young people will start to grope around in the dark for the right career goal.

Observing the list of successful world leaders, we will find a large number of those who have gone through the same “evolution” in their career path. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the incumbent Iranian President, used to be an engineer and teacher from a poor background before going into politics. He went to the Iran University of Science and Technology in 1976 to study civil engineering. He even earned his PhD in transportation engineering in 1997. Margaret Thatcher, the former British Prime Minister, was as a research chemist and a barrister before entering politics. The Iron Lady was educated in Oxford University from 1943 to 1947 and was awarded a Chemistry Bachelor of Science degree upon graduation.

Frequent switch of jobs until they find the one that they are reasonably content to stick to for the rest of their lives is thus inevitable, even advocated.
