Chewing is something that comes very naturally. When we chew, we don't normally think about it very much. But actually, there is a lot of science behind chewing.

Chewing helps us digest(消化) food. It is the simplest and most useful way to do this. Not chewing enough can lead to food being too large to be digested. Chewing releases saliva (口水) which also helps to digest food.

Chewing isn't all good news, though. Chewing gum (口香糖), for example, can cause a few problems. After a long time, your teeth will feel the effects of all that chewing. If you always chew on one side of your mouth, your jaw (下巴) might hurt. If you chew too much chewing gum, muscles(肌肉) around your mouth will grow, and your face might start to look a little square.

Some scientists say that chewing affects your memory. Repeating words and ideas in your mind helps your memory. If you are chewing gum all the time, you will find it much harder to do this. As a result, you may find it harder to build up your memory. However, this is all still very uncertain.

However, it isn't all bad news. Chewing gum may also improve your reactions(反应). Scientists recently did tests. They found people who were chewing gum had faster reaction times.
