Passage Three Questions 31 to 35 are based on the following passage. It is difficult to estimate the number of youngsters involved in home schooling, where children are not sent to school and receive their fomal education from one or both parents. Legislation and court decisions have made, it legally possible in most states for parents to educate their children at hmne, and each year more people take advantage of that opportunity.
Supporters of home education claim that it is less expensive and far more efficient than mass public education. Moreover they quote several merits: relief of school
overcrowding, added curricular and pedagogical (课程和教学法) ahematives, strengthened family relationships, lower dropout rates, increased motivation, higher standardized test scores, and reduced discipline problems. Supporters of home schooling also believe that it provides the parents with the opportunity to reinforce their moral values through education. Critics of home schooling movement claim that it creates as many problems as it solves. They acknowledge that, in a few cases, home schooling offers educational opportunities superior to those found in most public schools, but few parents can provide such educational advantages. Some parents who withdraw their children from the schools in favor of home schooling have an inadequate educational background and insufficient formal training ta provide a satisfactory education for their children. Typicany, parents have i-ewer, not more, technological resources available than do schools. However, the relatively nexpensive computer technology that is readily available today is causing some to challenge the notion that hmne schooling is in any way not so good as more highly structured classroom education. Finally, a sociological (社会学的) concern is the restricted social interaction experienced by children who are educated at home. Technology will never replace the pupil-teacher relationship. Also, while relationships with parents and brothers and sisters may be improved, children taught at home may develop a distorted (歪曲的)view of society.

Planning is a very important activity in our lives. It can give pleasure and even excitement, but cause quite severe headaches. The more significant the task ahead, the more careful the planning required. Getting to school or to work on time is a task requiring little or no planning. It is almost a routine. A mouth's touting holiday abroad, or better still, getting married, is a different matter altogether, ff the holiday involves a church wedding, with 50 guests, a reception, a honeymoon in Italy, and returning to a new home, this requires even more planning to make sure that is successful. Planning is our way of trying to ensure success and of avoiding costly failures we cannot 'afford. It is equally essential to mankind as a whole, to nations, to families and to each individual; the scale may vary, but the degree of importance does not.

Passage One
Questions 21 to 25 are based on the following passage.
Today people all over the world are beginning to hear and learn more and more about the problem of pollution. PoLlution is caused either by man's release of completely new and often arti ficial substances into the environment, or by releasing greatly increased amounts of natural substance, such as oil from oil tankers into the sea.
The whole industrial process, which makes many of tile goods and machines we need and use in our daily life, is bound to create a number of waste products which upset the ecological balance. Many of those waste products can be disposed of sensibly, but when moure new goods are produced, there will be new, dangerous wastes to be disposed of. Many people, therefore, see pollution as only part of the larger and more complex problem--the whole process of industrial produetion and consumption of goods. Others again see the problem mainly in connection with agriculture, where new methods make farmers grow more on their land to feed population. However, the land itself is gradually becoming worn out as it is being used. Chemical mixture cannot restore the balance.
Whatever its underlying causes, there is no doubt that much of the pollution problem could be controlled if only everyone would make more effort. In the home there is an obvious need to control litter and waste. Food comes wrapped up three or four times in packages that all have to be disposed of; drinks are increasingly sold in bottles or tins which cannot be reused. This not only causes a litter problem, but also is a great waste of resources. Advertising has helped this process by persuading many of us not only to buy things we neither want nor need, but to throw away much of what we do buy. So we can solve pollution problems by cutting out excess consumption, unnecessary buy and so on.
21. When we say that people are beginning to hear and learn more and more about the problem of pollution, we mean that __ [ ] A. this problem is becoming the center of public concern

C. the sensible disposal of the increasing industrial wastes D. the creation of new wastes
23. The major environmental problem with agriculture is caused by. [ ] A. the increased population farmers have to feed B. the worn-out farm land
C. the restoration of the balance of the farm land
D. the new methods of farming involving the use of chemical fertilizer
24. In the last paragraph, it is implied that [ ] A. the packaging problem only makes the pollution worse
B. people should consume less to prevent the problem of pollution
C. advertising plays a positive role in controlling the problem of pollution D. the problem of pollution can oaly be solved if we buy less
25. The passage mainly deals with __ [ ] A. the causes of pollution and possible solutions B. pollution in a broad sense C. the ecological balance
D. the industrial and agricultural pollution
