利用生词本身的构造，即构词法来判断词义是一个基本的方法：英语中的许多词都由若干不同的部分构成：词根、前缀、后缀。如果了解一个词的词根，一般说就可以推断出该词的意义。例如，reprocess，如果认识词根process，知道re是前缀，有“再，又”的意思，那么，这个词就不难猗测，是“再加工，再处理”的意思。但是使用这种方法的
前提是读者必须预先知道词根和词缀的意义。因此，读者在平常阅读和学习当中，应该注意记忆一些词根和词缀。
另外一种方法就是利用生词和上下文的关系推测其意义。生词不是孤立的、封闭的，它所在的句子、段落都会提供出很多暗示和线索，其中最常见的有如下五种: 1．定义线索，即作者自己定义或解释一个生词，如： A．Horology is the science of measuring time．
