How to be a Winner

Sir Steven Redgrave

Winner of 5 Olympic Gold Medals

“In 1997 I was found to have developed diabetes(糖尿病). Believing my career was over, I felt extremely low. Then one of the specialists said there was no reason why I should stop training and competing. That was it—the encouragement I needed. I could still be a winner if I believed in myself. I am not saying that it isn't difficult sometimes. But I wanted to prove to myself that I wasn't finished yet. Nothing is to stand in my way. ”

Karen Pickering

Swimming World Champion

“I swim 4 hours a day, 6 days a week. I manage that sort of workload by putting it on top of my diary. This is the key to success—you can?t follow a career in any field without being well-organized. List what you believe you can achieve. Trust yourself, write down your goals for the day, however small they are, and you?ll be a step closer to achieving them. ”

Kirsten Best Poet & Writer

“When things are getting hard, a voice inside my head tells me that I can't achieve something. Then, there are other distractions, such as family or hobbies. The key is to concentrate. When I feel tense, it helps a lot to repeat words such as ?calm?, ?peace? or ?focus?, either out loud or silently in my mind. It makes me feel more in control and increases my confidence. This is a habit that can become second nature quite easily and is a powerful psychologicaltool. ” 71. What does Sir Steven Redgrave mainly talk about?

Food is so primal, so essential a part of our lives, often the mere sharing of recipes with strangers turns them into good friends.

—Jasmine Heiler

“My mum makes the best cooked chicken you will ever taste!” Sound familiar? How about “We had a great dinner last night with our family”? Or, maybe this one: “I spent the weekend baking cakes with my grandmother”?

Wherever there is food, it seems families are not far behind. The dining table has always been a symbol of good times and even better company, so it?s only natural that some of the best moments of our lives are shared over a hot pot or around a baked dinner.

Countless similarities exist between preparing food and planning one?s life, and the lesson we must learn is that there is no such thing as instant success. Proof Is in the Pudding! makes these similarities easier to see by exploring the right ingredients for a happy life, and a perfect pudding.

Many of us have had the miserable experience of a rainy weekend at home. Likewise, many of us have had boredom turned into entertainment by cooking with a few family members. In Angel Food Flop (失败) we learn, flop or not, it?s having fun that matters.

Food is a treat for the senses. And a taste, like a smell, is capable of conjuring up vivid memories of the past. Proust explores the relationship between taste and memory in Remembrance of Things Past. Be careful — one tiny crumb (碎屑) can result in hours of reminiscing(缅怀).

Food plays such an important part in everyone's life because it is tightly linked to our memories, our friends and our family. It gives our body energy in more ways than we will ever know. There is no other way to say it; food really is the heart of life. 74. What Jasmine Heiler said suggests that ________. A. food is the important and necessary part in our life B. we should share food with strangers

C. the dining table can make strangers become good friends D. if you want to make friends, you must eat with strangers

75. How does the author feel when he tells about sharing food with family members? A. Satisfied B. Pessimistic C. Proud D. Joyful 76. What does the underlined phrase “conjuring up” probably mean? A. recalling B. connecting C. reminding D. mixing 77. What would be the best title for the passage? A. Success Doesn?t Come All of a Sudden

B. Boredom Can Be Changed into Entertainment C. Food Is a Treat for the Senses

D. Food Is the Heart of Life

On the west side of the island of Manhattan in New York City, tree by tree, leaf by leaf, a 2,500 square foot sector of the Central African Republic?s Dzanga Ndoki Rainforest has been transported to, or recreated at, the American Museum of Natural History?s new hall of biodiversity(生物多样性). When the hall opens this May, visitors will visit one of the world?s biggest and most accurate reproductions of one of nature?s most threatened creations. To bring the rainforest to New York, a team of nearly two dozen scientists — the largest collecting expedition the museum has ever organized for an exhibit — spent five weeks in the African rainforest collecting soil, plants, and leaves; recording and documenting species; studying trees; shooting videotape and still photos; and interviewing local people. “This area has been explored very little”, says Hoel Cracraft who estimates that the museum will eventually collect 150 to 180 mammals, more than 300 species of birds, hundreds of butterflies, and hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of organisms. The exhibition may even have produced a special prize — scientists suspect they have uncovered several new species.

To give the forest a sense of realness, the back wall of the exhibit is an enormous video screen, sounds will come out from hidden speakers, and plans even call for forest smells. Computer controls will vary the effects so that no two walkthroughs will ever be exactly the same. After the team returned to New York, the forest was reproduced with the help of the computer. Computer modeling programmes plotted distances and special relationships. Artists studied photos and brought what they saw to life. Plaster trees were made. Recreated animals began to stand in the rainforest of the hall. Flying creatures will hang from the ceiling. The light in the forest, one of the exhibit?s cleverest recreations will seem real. Long tube lights will have the correct colour and temperature to produce a natural effect. The plants and animals exhibited throughout the hall exist naturally in a perfect balance-remove one, and the whole is imperfect if not endangered. The exhibit is proof to the hope that the world?s rainforests will never exist solely as a carefully preserved artifact.

78. How did the museum collect the data in the Central African Republic? A. It sent a large team of scientists there. B. It cooperated with many African scientists. C. It hiredlocal people to collect species. D. It sent cameramen to shoot videotapes.

79. To give the forest a sense of realness, all the following are used EXCEPT that _______. A. hidden loudspeakers are used to produce forest sound B. a huge video screen is put up on the back wall

C. special equipment is employed to produce forest smells D. the forest is surrounded by front and back walls 80. What is the main theme of the last paragraph? A. The layout of the rainforest exhibition. B. The balance between animals and plants.

C. Preservation of the rainforest exhibition as an artifact. D. The clever design of lighting. 81. What is this passage mainly about?

8

A. The history of the American Museum of Natural History. B. The reproduction of the rainforest at a New York museum.

C. Visitors? interest in the rainforest reproduction at a New York museum. D. Saving rainforests in the Central African Republic.

(D)

During a meeting people are communicating continuously, and not only the people who are speaking. Everybody who is present expresses non-verbally how he or she feels during the meeting. They continuously show if they think the subjects for discussion are interesting and if they agree with the speakers.

The people that are present can determine, without words, how the conversation goes and who gets the floor. It often seems that the people who talk the most have the most influence on the course of the conversation and on the eventual decision-making. However, this is not always the case. Sometimes people who do not have much to say can change or disrupt the course of the conversation just by their presence.

When the people who are participating in the meeting are discussing a subject, their involvement can be seen from their attitude. The people who are not that interested sit back in their chairs, and often draw the nicest doodles (涂鸦), while giving others the idea that they are taking notes. The people who are really not interested at all stare idly into space or just keep looking around them. When everyone adopts this pose, then it's possible that the meeting was scheduled for the wrong time of the day or there is little interest for the subject. In that case such subjects do not need to be discussed for very long.

People who are participating in the meeting and are of the opinion that the subject is important follow the speakers in a non-verbal manner. When they agree with the speaker, they nod a lot. They take on an open, attentive attitude whereby they often lean forward a little. It is also striking how often listeners adopt the same attitude as the speaker that they are in agreement with. By paying attention to the attitudes of the people present, you can get an idea about the division of opinions. Maybe half of the listeners adopt the attitude of the speaker and the other half is sitting in a defensive attitude. The people who are in disagreement with the speaker hardly move their heads. They sit backwards and adopt a closed attitude. Often they fold their arms or they cover their mouths with their hands. When they start shaking their heads they are probably about to say something.

It is important to involve everyone in the meeting. People who are silent also have an opinion, and it is important to hear this opinion during the meeting. It often happens that people are silent during the meeting and only express their opinion afterwards in the corridors. However, the people who are silent do react, in a non-verbal manner, on what is being said during the meeting. A good way to involve them in a conversation is by reacting to their body language. You can address the non-verbal behaviour and link a question to it such as: \think it's important that this meeting is carried on?\with this statement?\

Communication also takes place on a relational level during a meeting, besides the discussions related to the subjects. It is not so much about what a speaker says exactly but more about what he \means with what he says. An underlying message can be given for example about the relation with another person in the meeting. The meaning of a comment

9

sometimes becomes clearer through the body language of the speaker than through the words. Especially through variation in intonation, a statement can have a completely different meaning. 82. What does the phrase get the floor mean? A. have authority over somebody B. reach the first place C. have the loudest voice D. have a voice in the discussion

83. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A. Those folding their arms are in disagreement with the speaker. B. Those talking most are always making eventual decisions.

C. Only when the people feel interested in the topic being discussed do they continuously

communicate.

D. People who are silent don?t have an opinion. 84. In which way can you conclude the meeting is dull? A. People are sitting leaning forward a little. B. People move their heads every now and then. C. People who are listening give a deep sigh.

D. People who are sitting back draw the nicest doodles.

85. How do you know the exact meaning of the comment stated by the speaker? A.From the speaker?s body language.

B. From what exactly the speaker says. C. From the audience?s attitude. D. From the speaker?s gestures.
