English is the most widely used language in the history of our planet. One in every seven human beings can speak it. More than half of the world’s books and three quarters of international mail are in English. Of all languages, English has the largest vocabulary — perhaps as many as two million words.
However, let’s face it: English is a crazy language. There is no egg in an eggplant, neither pine nor apple in a pineapple and no ham in a hamburger. Sweet-meats are candy, while sweetbreads, which aren’t sweet, are meat.
We take English for granted. But when we explore its paradoxes (探讨它的矛盾), we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square, public bathrooms have no baths in them.
And why is it that a writer writes, but fingers don’t fing, grocers don’t groce, and hammers don’t ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, shouldn’t the plural of booth be beeth? One goose, two geese — so one moose, two meese?
How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell the next?
English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects (反映) the creativity of human beings. That’s why, when stars are out, they are visible (能看见的); but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it; but when I wind up this essay, I
end it.

A person’s ability to quickly react to different circumstances might better indicate his or her chances for a longer and healthier life, than their blood pressure, weight or exercise levels, reports a new study by British researchers.
While this can be attributed, in part, to differences in lifestyles because commonly, the more intelligent people are, the less likely they tend to smoke and suffer from extreme weight, there was still much of the gap that could not be previously explained. In fact, according to the authors, people’s reaction times are a measure of their intelligence (IQ), which, in its turn is an indicator of “system integrity” (系统完整性) of their bodies, in other words, how well the rest of the body is wired together.
The Scottish research appears to be the first to focus on a comparison between people’s
D. dull
intelligence and their death. The findings were based on the study of 7,414 people nationwide for more than a twenty-year period of time.
In the experiment, the reaction times of all the study participants were measured by the means of an electrical device that was fitted with a small screen and 5 numbered buttons. The participants then were asked to press the matching buttons when they saw some number appearing on screen. The time that every volunteer had taken to react was meanwhile recorded and averages worked out.
It was found later that since the mid-80s, more than 1,200 people have died, and 568 of them from heart related conditions. The experts then compared the reaction times, smoking and drinking habits, weight and other factors of those people who had passed away with those who had survived. The results revealed that people with slow reactions were 2.6 times more likely to die prematurely (提前) from any cause. The only factor that was somehow connected with an increased risk of death was smoking—making it over 3 times more likely.
Traditional indicators such as heart rate, waist circumference, physical activity, drinking habits, body max index (BMI) and blood pressure were found to be less accurate. There had been assumptions that reaction time, as a measure of speed of the information-processing capacity, may be a marker for the integrity of the human body, the researchers wrote. But the current study shows that slower are the reaction times, and therefore worse capability to process information—better are the chances of physiological malfunctioning (技能丧失), which may in turn be linked to a premature death.

B. is more likely to die from heart related conditions C. must have high body max index D. is sure to have many bad habits

B. can be used to measure one’s information-processing capacity C. are not so accurate in telling a person’s lifespan as expected D. can only be used to tell a person’s lifestyle 70. We can infer from the passage that _________. A. it’s hard to tell whether one can live a longer life B. none of the traditional indicators are reliable
C. the Scottish researchers are still not sure what leads to a longer life D. smoking is an important cause of a premature death
第三部分:写作
第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读短文,并按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
Speaking comes to most people as naturally as breathing. On many occasions our words are expressed without conscious thought; in fact we rarely stop and think about what we are saying. Thousands of words pour out of our mouths each day as our thoughts, opinions, judgments and beliefs are freely conveyed. Often, however, we are unconscious of the positive or negative effect which these words have on ourselves and the people around us.
Words have tremendous power. Words give out energy and a message which creates a reaction in others. Everything you say produces an effect in the world. Whatever you say to someone else will produce some kind of an effect in that person. We are constantly creating something, either positive or negative with our words.
An important key to success in life is to understand the power of words. A word is a
permanent thought. Our thoughts do have a great effect on us even though they are internal. What we think affects the way we live our life, and affects our emotions, our attitudes and our behaviour. A thought spoken, however, has even more power. It can never be taken back ; it is out of our mouth and will have an effect. Our words have even more power than our thoughts because they not only affect ourselves, but the people and the world around us.
Successful people take control of their words, rather than letting their words control them.
They are more conscious of their thoughts and words and the power they produce. Successful people understand that they need to speak positively rather than negatively in order to see success. Successful people are characterized by the words that they speak. They know the importance of speaking words that will build self-esteem and confidence, build relationships and build possibilities. They speak words of affirmation, encouragement, love, acceptance and appreciation. 71.Why does speaking come to most people as naturally as breathing ?(No more than 15 words) __________________________________________________________________________ 72.
