一. 单元解读

本单元的中心话题是“伟人的品格、几位伟人的生平”,内容涉及伊莱亚斯的故事、

纳尔逊·曼德拉的生平简介、威廉·廷代尔的故事等,而主要内容是围绕当代英雄纳尔逊·曼德拉展开的。教材借穷苦的黑人工人伊莱亚斯的口吻,叙述发生在他身边的有关纳尔逊·曼德拉的故事。这样的写法有别于惯常所采用的平铺直叙,虽然只反映出了曼德拉的一个侧面,但读起来却更亲切感人,引人入胜,还留给了学生更多的思考空间。

1.“热身”(Warming Up)部分列出了24个形容词,要求学生从中选择哪些可以用来描述伟人,引导学生思考伟人应具有的品格,开展讨论并列表说明。这样的安排既可突出本单元的主题——伟人的品格,又体现了本单元的功能项目——发表意见与评论。

2.“预读”(Prereading)部分设计了讨论题:著名的人物是否也就是伟大的人物。让学生结合书中所列的古今中外的六位人物开展讨论、发表意见。

3.“阅读”(Reading)部分题为“伊莱亚斯的故事”,由伊莱亚斯向我们叙述纳尔逊·曼德拉的故事,时间是从1952年到1963年。

4.“理解”(Comprehending)部分设置了四个练习,主要用来帮助学生更好地理解阅读课文的内容。

5. “写作”(Composition)部分通过要求描述曼德拉的生平而学会写人物传记。

Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela was born on 18 July 1918. He was the first black president of South Africa and he was one of the great moral and political leaders of our time. In 1944 Mandela helped found the African Congress Youth League (ANCYL), and he was elected chairman of ANCYL in 1948. From 1962 to 1990 (29 years), Mandela was put into prison because of opposing South Africa's white minority government. In prison, Mandela never compromised his political principles and was always a source of strength for the other prisoners. He was first democratically elected State President of South Africa on 10 May 1994~June 1999.
