山西书院作为我国书院文化的一部分，为山西的文化教育事业做出了重要贡献。山西书院最早兴起于辽代，经过宋元明的发展和清代的繁荣，到清末开始衰落。从山西书院衰落后的种种表现，可以看出其衰落是由一定原因造成的。衰落之后的山西书院是因循守旧还是改弦更张，其面临着种种道路选择。在当时国家内外交困，变法自强的大背景下，山西书院开始顺应时势，通过国家外力的支持和内部自身的调试，加之一定的改革基础和条件，山西书院进行了大范围的书院变学堂的近代化改革，这一过程经历了改革——照旧办理——改革的曲折发展道路，最终实现了山西书院的近代化变革，山西境内各大书院先后改为大学堂、中学堂和小学堂，从名称、制度、课程设置、规章制度等方面进行了西学化管理。改革后的山西书院制度被彻底废除，山西书院以一种全新的姿态步入了近代化，至此，山西近代教育开始兴起。清末山西书院的衰落在山西近代教育的兴起中起了重要作用，推动了山西文化教育事业的发展。（摘要内容一般400字以内，小四号、宋体，行距1.5倍）

About the Decline of Shanxi Academy in Late Qing Dynasty and
the Rise of Shanxi’s Modern Education

As part of China’s academy culture, Shanxi Academy has made important contributions to culture and education of Shanxi. Shanxi Academy was launched in Liao Dynasty. It was developed in Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasty and flourished in Qing. Then it declined in late Qing Dynasty. We can conclude that the decline was caused by some given reasons out of the Academy after declining. It faced many roads to taken such as to be conservative or to make a fresh start then. At the time there are difficulties in home and abroad so that political reform and self-improvement happened. Shanxi Academy began to conform to the trend. Shanxi Academy conducted a large-scale modernization from academy to school by the external support from the nation and internal adjustment itself combined with a certain foundation and conditions for reform. This process has experienced a roundabout way of development: Reform – Handle as usual –Reform, and ultimately realized the modernization of Shanxi Academy. Major academies in Shanxi Province had changed to large schools, middle schools and elementary schools and managed like Western in name, system, curriculum, regulatory management and other aspects. The system of Shanxi Academy was abolished after the reform. Shanxi Academy entered the modernization in a new attitude. Thus, modern education began to rise in Shanxi. The decline of Shanxi Academy in late Qing Dynasty plays an important role in the rise of modern education and promotes the development of culture and education in Shanxi. （Time New Roman、 小四、行距1.5倍）
