一、产品说明书的定义与功能
(一)产品说明书的定义
所谓产品说明书就是生产企业向广大公众和用户介绍宣传其产品的说明性材料或文书。
(二)产品说明书的功能
产品说明书具有信息功能、指示功能。
具体说来，产品说明书的功能表现在以下三个方面： 1．介绍产品 2．指导消费 3．扩大销售
总之，产品说明书的主要功用在于让用户了解产品的成分或构成、功能(功效)、用法、注意事项、维修保养等，从而激发用户购买产品的欲望。
二、产品说明书的内容
产品说明书的结构比较简单，一般由标题、正文、署名三部分构成。
其中标题可以直接写“产品简介”或“说明书”、“说明”、“产品介绍”等，也可以只写产品的具体名称如“虎标万金油”、“白猫牌洗衣用漂白剂”、“紫星远红外热敷带”等，英文如Displaying pictures and videos on a television、Kodak EasyShare等。
正文一般分项列出产品成分或构成、性能、用途、用法、注意事项等。
署名中的主要信息一般包括产品的生产商和／或经销商的名称、地址、电话、邮编等。
下面先看一份完整的中文产品说明书及其英译文：
Qingyin Wan
Ingredients: Fructus Chebulae；Fructus Mume；Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae; Radix Puerariae；Radix Trichosanthis；Poria；Massala；Radix Glycyrrhizae.
Description: Brown big honeyed pills；tastes sweet，slightly sour and astringent． Action：To remove heat and relieve sore-throat and promote production of body fluid and moisten for dryness．
Indications：Loss of body fluid due to lung—heat，discomfort in pharynx，dryness of the throat and mouth，celostomia and aphonia．
Usage and dosage：1 pill each time，twice a day，to be swallowed with warm boiled water or kept in mouth to dissolve gradually．
Precaution：Contraindicated with pungent and spicy foods.
Notice：Remove the waxen shell and the plastic shell before taking it；do not swallow in the whole pill．

一般情况下，说明书的重点在于强调产品的使用以及注意事项。请看下面的例子： 例2：
Adults: usually 2 tablets daily, morning and noon. In severe cases the morning dose may be increased to 2 tablets.
Elderly patients: 1 tablet in the morning. In cases of insomnia or severe restlessness, additional treatment with a sedative in the acute phase is recommended.
成人：通常每天两片，早晨及中午各1片。严重病例早晨的剂量可加至2片。
老年病人通常每天1片，早晨口服。对失眠或严重不安的病例，建议在急性期加服镇静剂。
三、产品说明书的语言要求
1．准确无误 2．简洁清晰
3．通俗易懂，措辞紧凑
例：保质期: -18°C以下温度保存12个月。
Shelf life: Twelve months (to be kept under the temperature of-18°C.)
例：雨衣淋湿，须挂阴凉通风处阴干，忌在烈日下暴晒，如有皱纹折印，不可熨烫。
The wet raincoat has to be dried in a shady and well-vented place instead of being exposed to the burning sun. Even if there is any folding, it cannot be ironed．
