Passage 1

Questions 36—40 are based on the following passage:

The communications explosion is on the scale of the rail, automobile or telephone revolution. Very soon you’ll be able to record your entire life electronically—anything a microphone or a camera can sense you’ll be able to store. In particular, the number of images a person captures in a lifetime is sure to rise dramatically. The thousand images a year I take of my children on a digital camera are all precious to me. In a generation’s time, my children’s children will have total image documentation of their entire lives—a visual diary of tremendous personal value.

In Cambridge, we’re already working on millimeter-square(平方毫米) computing and sensing devices that can be linked to the Internet through the radio network. This sort of connectivity will expand dramatically as tiny communications devices become dirt-cheap and multiply. Just

imagine what the paint on wall could do if it had this sort of communication dust in it: change color, play music, show movies or even speak to you.

Falling costs raise other possibilities too. Because launching space vehicles is about to become very much cheaper, the number of satellites is likely to go up greatly. There’s lots of space up there so we could have millions of them. And if you have millions of low-orbit satellites you can establish a global communications network that completely does away with towers and poles.

Speech is so flexible that I expect voice communication to become almost free eventually: you’ll pay just a monthly fixed charge and be able to make as contacts, friends and relatives. One day I anticipate being able to keep in touch with my family in Poland on an optical-fiber audio-video link; we’ll be able to sit down ―together’ to eat.

Cars are an interesting IT-platform because they have big batteries and lots of so far unconnected digital devices. Soon each one will be on the Internet so your children can play games while you’re traveling and your partner can deal with their email. And you every lamppost could be on the Internet too—each one with sensors to monitor light, pollution, air quality and traffic flow.

36. By saying that he takes many images of his children, the author wants to ______. A. show his great interest in photography B. compare his own life with his children’s

C. display the influence of communications on life D. demonstrate the ease of enjoying life electronically

37. The author most probably thinks that the communication dust is _____. A. worthless B. amazing C. small D. cheap

38. Which of the following statements about the low-orbit satellites is true?

A. The low-orbit satellites can help reduce the costs of communications network. B. The low-orbit satellites will enable all the communications networks to combine. C. The low-orbit satellites would replace towers and poles functionally. D. There will be more low-orbit satellites than other kinds of satellites.

39. According to the passage, an optical-fiber audio-video link can enable us to _____. A. talk and see each other no matter where we are B. eat with our family no matter where we are C. talk or see anyone we want free of charge D. find more business partners and friends

40. The phrase ―each one‖ (Line 2, Para. 5) can be best replaced by _____. A. each digital device B. each car C. each battery D. each person

Passage 2

Questions 41—45 are based on the following passage:

Hardly a week goes by without some advance in technology that would have seemed incredible 50 years ago. And we can expect the rate of change to accelerate rather than slow down within our lifetime. The developments in technology are bound to have a dramatic effect on the future work. By 2010, new technology will have revolutionized communications. People will be transmitting more messages down telephone lines that previously have been sent by post. Not only postmen but

also clerks and secretaries will vanish in a paper-free society. All the routine tasks they perform will be carried on a tiny silicon chip so that they will be as obsolete as the horse and cart after the invention of the motor car. One change will make thousands, if not millions, redundant.

Even people in traditional professions, where expert knowledge has been the key, are unlikely to escape the effects of new technology. Instead of going to a solicitor, you might go to a computer which is programmed with all the most up-to-date legal information. Doctors, too, will find that an electronic competitor will be able to carry out a much quicker and more accurate diagnosis and recommend more efficient courses of treatment. In education, teachers will be largely replaced by teaching machines far more knowledgeable than any human being. Most learning will take place in the home via video conferencing. Children will still go to school though, until another place is created where they can make friends and develop social skills.

41. According to the writer, the rate of change in technology ______. A. will remain the same B. will slow down C. will spend up D. can not be predicted

42. The writer expects that by 2010 new technology will have revolutionized communications and ______.

A. people needn’t telephone each other

B. the present postal system will have disappeared C. people will no longer send letters

D. the postmen will have been replaced by silicon chip 43. The word ―they‖ in Line 9, Para.1 refers to ______. A. the tiny silicon chips

B. the letters written on paper

C. the postmen, clerks and secretaries

D. the routine task performed by the postmen

44. From the second paragraph, we can infer that ______. A. professionals won’t be affected by new technology B. doctors won’t be as efficient as computers C. computers can replace lawyers D. expects will lose job in the future 45. In the writer’s view, _____.

A. people should get prepared for the future B. there exists no real threat of unemployment C. the advance of technology is not desirable D. machines will have control over men

Passage 3

Questions 46—50 are based on the following passage:

Japan is getting tough about recycling—and not in the paper and plastic kind of way. Recently, the country requires that all electronic goods—TVs, VCRs, stereos, and more—be recycled. But recycling will not be left to consumers, instead, the devices will be sent to the originals manufacturer for proper disposal.

The new law poses a few challenges to manufacturers who are now rushing to set up collection networks and perfecting techniques to disassemble and recycle older products. With an eye toward
