are future, they are also integrating easily recycled materials into new products. Plastics, a major component of most electronic products, pose a particular obstacle because their quality becomes worse and worse with age, losing strength and flexibility even if reprocessed. NEC Corp. overcomes this problem by creating a plastics sandwich, in which the filling is 100 percent recycled plastic and the outer layers a mixture and toughness for use as a case for desktop PCs. The company, in cooperation with plastic maker Sumitomo Dow, has also developed a new plastic, which engineers claim retains its mechanical properties through repeated recycling. NEC uses the plastic, which is also flame-retardant(阻燃的) in battery cases for notebook PCs.

Meanwhile, Matsushita Electric, maker of the Panasonic brand, is avoiding plastic in favor of magnesium(镁). Magnesium, says the company, is ideal for recycling because it retains its original strength through repeated reprocessing. Matsushita has developed molding techniques to form magnesium into the case for a 21-inch TV. Unfortunately, the magnesium case and energy-saving features make the TV about twice as expensive as an ordinary model. The company hopes, however, that increased use of magnesium will eventually bring prices down.

Passage 4

Questions 51—55 are based on the following passage:

Soaps and detergents(洗涤剂)are very similar in their chemical properties. However, there is a significant difference between them: soaps are produced from natural products and detergents are synthetic or man-made.

Both soaps and detergents share a critical chemical property—they are surface active agents. In other words, they reduce the surface tension of water. Normally, water molecules have a strong

attraction to each other, which causes water to form small beads on clothes. By reducing this effect water soaks more easily in clothes and removes stains faster.

There are some differences between them, however. Soaps possess a number of qualities that make them preferable to detergents. First, as mentioned earlier, they are natural products and less harmful to the human skin and the environment. Soaps are biodegradable(微生物可降解的) and don’t create pollution in our rivers and streams. On the other hand, soap will combine with the magnesium and calcium ions(离子) in hard water to create insoluble(不可溶解的)remains that can block drains and stick to clothing. Since the soap does not rinse out as well as detergent it tends to build up on clothes and over a long period of time change the fabric to be bad while leaving a smell. Another shortcoming of soap is that it is less powerful than synthetic detergent and tends to lose its cleaning power over time. So don’t wash your laundry with soap!

An added benefit of detergents is that they can be specially engineered for each cleaning task and for use in different types of machines. Front loading washing machines produce better cleaning results when the clothes strike the wall of the washing machine’s tub as it rotates. This type of machine will clean your clothes better if there are fewer bubbles to reduce their impact. Top loading washing machines, on the other hand, function better with more bubbles since the bubbles trap excess dirt and keep it from reattaching to your clothes. Many people also have a fascination with the spectacular colors produced by bubbles. 51. What is common with soap and detergent? A. Both can cause water to bead on cloths.

B. Both can reduce the attraction of water molecules. C. Both can suit every cleaning task competently.

D. Both can leave something that is insoluble on clothes. 52. Soaps have a disadvantage in terms of ______.

A. environmental conservation B. skin protection

C. cloth preservation D. water tension reduction 53. As surface active agents, soaps and detergents can ______. A. trap more dirt and prevent it from reentering the clothes B. make water molecules attract each other more strongly C. cause water to form fewer small beads on clothes D. enable more clothes to be washed in less water

54. Why do front loading washing machines function better with fewer bubbles? A. Because bubbles trap the dirt in the clothes.

B. Because bubbles reduce the hit of clothes on the machine’s wall. C. Because bubbles keep the clothes away from the washing powder. D. Because bubbles prevent the water from soaking in clothes. 55. The organization of the passage can be best described as _____. A. cause and effect

B. comparison and contrast C. clarification and illustration

D. classification and exemplification
