Passage 1

Questions 36—40 are based on the following passage:

It used to be the case that if you left your car in the sun on a hot summer’s day, then getting back in again afterwards was in agony. Not any more. Now you press your key into the door lick and the car’s air-conditioning system automatically starts cooling the interior. You just have to wait a minute before you get in.

That is just one of the newer gimmicks that make the modern car so much more comfortable to drive than those produced not so long ago. Another innovation is the self-adjusting seat. When you put the key in the car door, the front seat will automatically adjust itself to the driver’s preferred driving position.

These ideas were dreamt up at General Motors’ research laboratories in Detroit. The laboratory was set up in the mid-sixties, in response to consumer groups who attacked the company for its safely record. Since then, the company has set itself an impossible goal: that you’ll be able to walk away from most car accidents. It spends roughly one billion US dollars every year on safely research.

The company is working on help drivers survive crashes at higher speeds. The idea is that the driver won’t fly out of the car because of his seat belt. He won’t be crushed by the side door coming in because it will be strengthened by a side beam. His ribs won’t be crushed, nor his organs injured by the steering wheel, because it will bend when the body hits it. His face won’t be slashed by broken glass because the windscreen won’t shatter.

Every year, the total world-wide bill for injuries of all types is estimated at US $ 500 billion. Transport injuries of all sorts account for one quarter of this. This gives some indication of the size of the problem the scientists working at General Motors’ research laboratory have set themselves. 36. It can be learned from the first paragraph that ______. A. the sun is no longer as hot these days

B. the car’s air-conditioner can make the interior cooler C. the painful experience doesn’t exist any longer

D. the driver doesn’t need to wait before he gets in the car now 37. In Line 1, Para. 2, ―gimmicks‖ means ______.

A. types of machine B. piece of equipment C. electronic devices D. technical innovations 38. The laboratory’s impossible goal can be interpreted as that _____. A. people will not be injured in most car accidents B. car accidents will no longer exist

C. General Motors will be responsible for most car accidents D. people will not hurry away from most car accidents

39. The major concerns of General Motors’ research laboratory are ______. A. traffic regulations B. driving techniques C. the car’s interior structures D. innovations in cars 40. The purpose of the last paragraph is to tell the readers ______. A. the amount of money being spent on injuries every year B. the importance of General Motor’s laboratory research C. how transport injuries affect people’s lives

D. the economic problem scientists and researchers are faced with

Passage 2

Questions 41—45 are based on the following passage:

The first day of school one of my classmates began a talk with me that changed my life. She said, ―Hi, handsome. My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old.‖ ―Why are you in college at such an age?‖ I asked.

―I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!‖ she told me.

After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake. We became instant friends.

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet and I’ll never forget what she taught us. She cleared her throat and began:

―We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing. There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy and achieving success. ―You have to laugh and find humor each and every day.

―You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die. We have so many people walking around who are dead and they don’t even know it!

―There is a giant difference between growing older and growing older and growing up. If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old. If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight. Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding the opportunity in change.

―Have no regrets. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. They only people who fear death are those with regrets.‖

She concluded her speech by courageously singing ―The Rose.‖ She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives.

At year’s end, Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years sand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be.

41. What is the meaning of ―We became instant friends‖ in Line 8? A. We became friends right after the class. B. We never talked to each other after then.

B. one can grow up without doing anything C. it takes one’s talent and ability to grow up

D. one grows older at the same time when he grows up

44. According to Rose, people will not fear death when ______. A. they fulfill all they want to B. they still have dreams to fulfill

C. they become elderly people D. they find the chances in change 45. The passage is intended to ______. A. tell a moving story about Rose B. discuss what to do to grow up

C. instruct the readers how to live up to live D. teach the readers how to realize their dreams

Passage 3

Questions 46—50 are based on the following passage:

Motorways are, no doubt, the safest roads in Britain. Mile for mile, vehicle for vehicle, you are much less likely to be killed or seriously injured than on an ordinary road. On the other hand, if you do have a serious accident on a motorway, fatalities are much more likely to occur than in a comparable accident elsewhere on the roads.

Motorways have no sharp bends, no roundabouts or traffic lights and thus speeds are much greater than on other roads. Though the 70 m.p.h. limit is still in force, it is often treated with the contempt that most drivers have for the 30 m.p.h. limit applying in built up areas in Britain. Added to this is the fact that motorway drivers seem to like traveling in groups with perhaps barely ten metres between each vehicle. The resulting horrific pile-ups when one vehicle stops for some reason mechanical failure, driver error and so on have become all too familiar through pictures in newspaper or on television. How many of these drivers realize that it takes a car about one hundred metres to brake to a stop from 70 m.p.h? Drivers also seem to think that motorway driving gives them complete protection from the changing weather. However wet the road, whatever the visibility in mist or fog, they plough at ridiculous speeds oblivious of police warnings or speed restrictions until their journey comes to a conclusion.

Perhaps one remedy for this motorway madness would be better driver education. At present, learner drivers are barred from motorways and are thus, as far as this kind of driving is concerned, thrown in at the deep end. However, much more efficient policing is required, for it is the duty of the police not only to enforce the law but also to protect the general public from its own foolishness.

46. The passage is mainly concerned with the _____.

A. speed restriction B. remedy for motorway madness C. motorway driving D. duty of motorway police 47. Driving on motorways, you are likely to ______. A. meet traffic police B. see red traffic lights

C. be more easily involved in a fatal accident

D. have your speed limited because of roundabouts 48. Accidents on a motorway cannot result from ______.

A. poor driver education B. mechanical breakdown C. malfunction of traffic lights D. unfavorable weather 49. It can be inferred from the passage that ______. A. drivers on a motorway driver within the speed limit B. drivers on a motorway are protected by the police

C. most drivers on a motorway are often stopped by the police D. most drivers on a motorway drive at mad speeds

50. According to the author, one probable solution to motorway madness is _____. A. drivers should not be allowed to drive in groups B. the traffic police system should be improved

C. drivers should go back to school to finish their education D. learner drivers should pay more attention to their driving

Passage 4 Questions 51—55 are based on the following passage:

The quality of patience goes a long way toward your goal of creating a more peaceful and loving self. The more patient you are, the more accepting you will be of what life is, rather than insisting that life be exactly as you would like it to be. Without patience, life is extremely frustrating. You are easily annoyed, bothered, and irritated. Patience adds a dimension of ease and acceptance to your life. It’s essential for inner peace. Becoming more patient involves opening your heart to the present moment, even if you don’t like it. If you are stuck in a traffic jam, late for an appointment, being patient would mean keeping yourself from building a mental snowball before your thinking get out of hand and gently reminding yourself to relax. It might also be a good time to breathe as well as an opportunity to remind yourself that, in the bigger scheme of things, being late is ―small stuff‖

Patience is a quality of heart that can be greatly enhanced with deliberate practice. An effective way that I have found to deepen my own patience is to create actual practice periods—periods of time that I set up in my mind to practice the art of patience. Life itself becomes a classroom, and the curriculum is patience. You can start with as little as five minutes and build up your capacity for patience over time. What you’ll discover is truly amazing. Your intention to be patient, especially if you know it’s only for a short while, immediately strengthens your capacity for patience. Patience is one of those special qualities where success feeds on itself. Once you reach little milestone—five minutes of successful patience—you’ll begin to see that you do indeed have the capacity to be patient, even for longer periods of time. Over time, you may even become a patient person.

Being patient will help you to keep your perspective. You’ll see even a difficult situation, say your present challenge, isn’t ―life or death‖ but simply a minor obstacle that must be dealt with. Without patience, the same scenario can become a major emergency complete with yelling, frustration, hurt feelings, and high blood pressure.

51. In the first paragraph, the expression ―building a mental snowball’ can be best replaced by ______.

A. imagining a big snowball B. awaiting a result calmly C. taking a deep breath D. losing your patience 52. The main idea of the first paragraph is that _____. A. it takes a long time to cultivate patience B. patience is very important for us C. patience is essential for inner peace D. being late is ―small stuff‖

53. It’s implied in the second paragraph that ______.
