副部长所领导的assistant secretary就不能称作副部长：其一，从语词上讲，美国财政部的assistant secretary 宜译作“助理部长”（对应职务相当于我国的司长）；其二，从地位和逻辑上而言，assistant secretary职务位于under secretary（副部长）之下，且一般领导着若干自己的deputy assistant secretary（副助理部长，对应职务相当于我国的副司长），也只能译作“助理部长”才合乎逻辑。
关于assistant的译法之说也适合美国国务院（State Department）的assistant secretary以及联合国的assistant secretary general。美国国务院（the Department of State，顺便说一句，本人认为美国的“the Department of State”应译作“国务部”或者“外交部”）的首长国务卿（Secretary of State）下设1位Deputy Secretary直接领导6位Under Secretary（副国务卿），而每个Under Secretary又有自己的assistant secretary协助分管着各个局和部门，因而，assistant secretary职务不能与其上级Under Secretary（副国务卿）相提并论，故宜译作“助理国务卿”，而其副手deputy assistant secretary便顺理成章地译作“副助理国务卿（通译为“助理国务卿帮办”）”。同样，联合国的under secretary general往往有自己的assistant secretary general（简称ASG），因而，译作“助理秘书长”更合乎逻辑。这一点跟我国的情况也颇为相似，如市长助理（Assistant Mayor）级别往往低于副市长（Deputy Mayor）、校长助理（Assistant President）级别往往低于副校

长（Vice President）。
Assistant Attorney General应译成“副检察长”（马骁骁，2006：48），这一说法不太合乎逻辑。其一，根据美国的Department of Justice（司法部）（http://www.usdoj.gov/dojorg.htm）网上公布的情况，美国的司法部（也有人认为应译成检察院）的部长称Attorney General，常务副部长（Deputy Attorney General）1名，直接下级2名，1个称Solicitor General，另1个则叫Associate Attorney General，由于二者级别相同，故均可译作“副部长”，而司法部各局则由Assistant Attorney General负责，故而，Assistant Attorney General不能译作“副部长”，而应译作“助理部长”，正如assistant professor应译作“助理教授”而非“副教授”一样。
再比如，美国教育部（US Department of Education）的人事既设有assistant deputy secretary（助理常务副部长），也设有deputy assistant secretary（副助理部长），不难看出，助理常务副部长级别接近于assistant secretary（助理部长，司级），略高于副助理部长（相当于我国的副司级）。
当然，根据汉语语言表达习惯，在个别搭配中，assistant也偶尔译成“副”，如：assistant military attaché（副武官，也可用deputy military/defense attaché表示）、assistant stoker（副司炉）和assistant driller（副司钻）。不过，笔者认为，总体而言，将“assistant+职务”结构译作“助理…”、“assistant to+职务”

译作“…助理”不仅操作起来方便，而且也更合乎情理和实际情况，比如，将Assistant General Manager和Special Assistant to General Manager可分别直接译作“助理总经理”和“总经理特别助理”。 2.4 associate
根据词典解释，associate “denoting shared function or membership but with a lesser status”（Pearsall, 2001:101），即，“具有同样的作用，但是地位略低”。associate常与professor、president、fellow、 judge、engineer、director、editor和dean等学术方面的职务搭配表示“副”，如associate professor（副教授）、associate editor-in-chief（副总编，也有deputy editor-in-chief说法）、Associate President for the University of California（加州大学副校长）、Associate Chancellor at University of California at San Diego（分管圣地亚哥分校的加州大学副校长）、associate research fellow（副研究员）、associate dean（副院长、副教务长、副系主任）、Associate Attorney General（美国司法部副部长）、associate director（副主任、副导演）、associate producer（副制片人）、副主治医师（associate professor of treatment）、associate chief doctor（副主任医师）、associate chief engineer（副总工程师）、acting associate attorney general（司法部代理副部长）、associate ministers（副部长）和associate chief judge（法院副院长、副庭长、副审判长）等。

在英联邦国家（如英国、澳大利亚、爱尔兰、新西兰和南非等）以及其他一些国家（如奥地利国立大学）的大学中，我们发现还有pro-vice-chancellor和pro-chancellor说法，那么，pro-到底是什么意思？根据词典解释，作为前缀的pro-的意思是acting as a substitute or deputy for，即“代表、代理”，据此似乎可译作“副”。通过搜索，笔者发现，上述所提及的每所大学中的Chancellor一般均为荣誉头衔，译作“名誉校长”（陆谷孙，1993:285），这些Chancellor往往由名人充当，他们既不拿工资，也不住校办公，有的还有设有pro-chancellor（名誉副校长），因而其vice- chancellor是实质上的校长（参加《中国翻译》2006年6期拙作“校长还是副校长-vice-chancellor汉译探析”），这些 vice-chancellor（校长，退休后有的获得Vice-President Emeritus荣誉退休校长头衔）往往领导着若干助手pro-vice-chancellor。这样，根据逻辑，这些
