The Diary of Young Girl was written by a girl named Anne Frank. It is a true experience of a teenager in wartime (World War II, 1939-1945) and it has also become a symbol of the victory of the human spirit.

Here’s one of Anne’s diaries.

Friday, 10 September, 1943

Dear Kitty,

Every time I write to you something special seems to have happened, but they are more often unpleasant than pleasant things. However, now there is something wonderful going on. Last Wednesday evening, 8 September, we sat around listening to the seven o’clock news and the first thing we heard was: “Here follows the best news of the whole war. Italy has capitulated!” Italy’s unconditional surrender1! The Dutch program from England began at quarter past eight. “Listeners, an hour ago, I had just finished writing the chronicle of the day when the wonderful news of Italy’s capitulation came in. I can tell you that I have never deposited2 my notes in the wastepaper basket with such joy!” “God Save the King,” the American national anthem3, and the “Internationale” were played. As always, the Dutch program was uplifting4, but not too optimistic.5

Still we have troubles, too, it’s about Mr. Koophuis. As you know, we are all very fond of him, he is always cheerful and amazingly brave, although he is never well, has a lot of pain, and is not allowed to eat much or do much walking. “When Mr. Koophuis enters, the sun begins to shine,” Mummy said just recently, and she is quite right. Now he has had to go into the hospital for a very unpleasant abdominal operation and will have to stay there for at least four weeks. You really ought to have seen how he said good-bye to us just as usual-he might have simply been going out to do a bit of shopping.

New words:

1. capitulate v. to stop resisting an enemy and accept that you are defeated SYN surrender v.& n. 投降

2. deposit v. put down 放下,放置

3. national anthem n. the official song of a nation that is sung on special occasions 国歌 4. uplifting adj. making you feel happier or giving you more hope

5. optimistic adj. Expecting good things to happen or something to be successful

29. The underlined phrase “something wonderful” refers to (指代) that _. A. Anne’s family could listen to news B. Italy capitulated C. the Dutch program was uplifting D. Mr. Koophuis was cheerful 30. What is the most probable date that Mr. Koophuis returned from hospital?

A. 10 September. B. 24 September. C. 3 October. D. 17 October.

31. Which of the following is probably NOT true according to the passage?

A. Anne often faced unpleasant things. B. Anne’s family got news on radio.

C. Mr. Koophuis was welcome in Anne’s family.

D. Mr. Koophuis was quite afraid of his operation. B

短文中句子“Here follows the best news of the whole war. Italy has capitulated!” Now he has had to go into a hospital…and will have to stay there for at least four weeks.“至少4周”可推断出D项“10月17日”符合推断的时间范围。

You really ought to have seen how he said good-bye to us as usual-he might have simply been going out to do a bit of shopping.“像平常一样和我们告别,只是像他可能出去买点东西”的意义提示Mr.

An old man went to live with his son, his daughter-in-law, and a four-year-old grandson. The old man’s hands trembled, his eyesight was very poor, and he couldn't walk steadily (平稳地). The family ate together nightly at the dinner table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating rather difficult. Rice often dropped on the floor.

The son and the daughter-in-law became angry with the old man, so they put a small table in the corner. There, the grandfather ate alone, while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner at the table. Since the grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl.

The four-year-old son watched it all in silence. One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with a piece of wood on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, \are you making?\from when I grow up.\parents so that they were in silence. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks (脸颊). What's the best title of the passage? A. An old man and his son. B. A couple and their son C. A wooden bowl. D. A dinner table.
