A: With the help Metaphors We Live By, I use Cognitive Metaphor Theory of Lakoff and Johnson to construct my thesis, especially the three types of metaphor is the key that helps me analyse the reasons of metaphorical differences of plants words. Q: Why did you choose “plant vocabulary” not “animal or other vocabulary”? A: My friend opens a exporting company. She asks me help name the company, and I do not want to make some mistakes due to the cultural differences. Therefore, I begin to collect materials about cultural differences. I find metaphorical differences is interesting.At first, I choose animal but it is used too often, so I choose plant words at last. Q: Give a brief introduction about Part 3 of your thesis? A:In this part, I pay attention to set typical examples for the metaphorical differences between Britain and China. Frist, I set examples of peony, lily and bean to analyse the metaphorical meanings of the same plant in Britain and China. Second, I use apple to explain the metaphorical meanings of different plant word only for Britain. Third, bamboo and jasmine are examples to show the different metaphorical meanings of plant words only for China. Q:What?s the conclusion of your research? A:The view I hold on is that aesthetic psychology, thinking way, traditional culture and values,as well as the ecological environment are interactivity when plants are cognitived. That is to say the three types of Lakoff and Johnson are concomitant when we analyse the communication between China and Britain. Q:In Bibliography, which one is the most helpful for your thesis? A:I think the book of Metaphors We Live by (Lakoff. G & Johnson) gives me greatest help. Though I have known their theories in Chinese version, their book gives me original understanding and english expression that I hardly find in Chinese thesis. 15
