there are nearly one million copies of Chinese books, hundreds of newspapers and thousands of magazines in this campus library. And it is surprising that readers coming to this library seem to be a continuous stream. Readers consist of students, teachers, and the public outside this campus; African Americans, European Americans, and of course, many Chinese Americans.
Now the celebrated literature writers-Maxine Hong Kingston and Amy Tan are the hub of American literature. Maxine Hong Kingston wrote the two novels-The Woman
Warrior and China Men which produce great impact on American literature. American
magazine-Time and the New York Times both appreciate them two of the best writings, meanwhile, this two novels win the Best Awards in American Book Critics Circle for several times. And at that time, Amy Tan?s book-the Joy Luck Club was made into a film, among which Chinese cultural elements flooded. Now, no matter it is in the field of literature, art, or science and technology, and education, Chinese culture flourishes.
C. Chinese traditional medicine
Chinese traditional medicine and pharmacy is popular among the Americans. Traditional Chinese herbs, acupuncture and massage in the United States have an increasing influence on the medical sphere. Some universities in the United States specifically provide the course on Chinese medicine. More Americans use and are fond of the acupuncture. In New York, San Francisco and California, there are lots of Chinese medicinal herbs shops and many traditional Chinese doctors; even in the regions where have few Chinese Americans, there are some TCM practitioners.
D. Chinese having a significant influence on American English
The power and the attraction of one language derive from the state-owned cultural and economic strength. China, being one of the four Great Ancient Civilizations, has splendid cultural deposits of more than 5,000 years. It is one of the reasons that China shows her charm. Further more, with the establishment of the People's Republic of China, the implementation of the “reform and opening up” policy, China has developed in a stable way and will be going on. China becomes prosperous, thus, in the world there rises the so called chinoiserie, especially in the United States.
1. Loanwords
Ever since a long time ago, America treated English as the official language. But modern American English has absorbed other languages. This is the so-called loanword. Loanwords refer to words taken into one language from another. With the implementation of reform and opening-up policy and with the frequent contact with the U.S., lots of Chinese words are absorbed by America. The development of China has brought up lots of new words and expressions. Besides, because of Chinese famous food as Jiaozi, Tang-yuan, they are created in English. And the sources of the words “chop suey, pakchoi, and sampan” are the Chinese words.
2. Bilingual cartoons and films
First, because of the short history, and fewer resources in culture, meanwhile, because the subject of animated film (cartoons) fixed on the integration of many cultures, the American cartoons look around the world. So, many of the animated films are more based on other countries? classic fairy tales, or mythological etc. Take Hua Mulan-the 36th classic Disney full-length animated plot film for an example and according to the Chinese classic poems-the Ballad of Mulan and its related legends, Hua Mulan comes into being. When producing this cartoon, the producer successfully reconstructs the Chinese artistic scene. Mulan dresses gown, who is a traditional Chinese beauty. Symbols in Chinese culture such as the Great Wall, fans and matchmakers are in great use. Performance in erhu,a two-stringed bowed instrument with a lower register than jinghu or Chinese Zither, and the background as landscape last appealing with unique oriental charm.
Furthermore, the famous American animation studios Nickelodeon studio in Feb.7 2007, to celebrate the Chinese lunar New Year, brought out the cartoon series “Ni Hao, Kai-lan \This is a bilingual animation. The Associated Press reported that “The alluding of the cartoon is that Chinese culture will no longer be the pronoun of the exotic, but part of American life” ( ?).
3. Chinese language acquisition
With the rising and rapid economy development of China, China exerts more and more importantly on the political and the economic stage. Then the world started to learn Chinese. In recent years, the Chinese government devotes major effects to
establish Confucius institute in the world, which promotes Chinese culture, and further drives Chinese towards the world.
Many young Americans went to study in China; some of them are really interested in Chinese and come to learn Chinese. They can speak Putonghua well. The sentences “Thank you!” “How are you?” in Chinese is extremely easy for them. Along with the development of Chinese hot, there emerges the HSK(as American TOEFL and GRE)that is good for examining the level of foreigners? Putonghua(Mandarin). The number of Chinese learners in 1998 in American colleges is 28,456. To 2002, it increases to 34,153. Among five years, it raises by 20 %.
In the United States, the Chinese has become foreign language which has the fastest growing number of learners. There are nearly 800 universities and more than 200 high schools or primary schools that serve Chinese courses. As early as the autumn of 2006, with the application of American AP Chinese project, more than 2500 schools have applied for Chinese courses. Not only the cartoons are acted in Chinese and American English, but also in the field of education, lots of Universities or schools have implemented bilingual education. Under the circumstance of the American democracy, bilingual education so comes into being. Thus, in the U.S., there are more and more teaching materials, e.g. Integrated Chinese, Conversational Chinese-301, Practical Audio—Visual Chinese, China Panorama Approaching Chinese, New Pract ical Chinese Reader and Kung Fu: An Elementary Chinese Text.
In the United States, primarily Chinese learning is carried out in education institutions and schools which establish a course of Chinese. Learning like these is limited, especially in the environment of non-Chinese. To achieve a better Chinese level, Chinese department in some American universities can set up projects for studying in China or related projects.
IV. Conclusion
The United States is the world's largest nation of immigrants who create, develop and swell the America. From its history, American ethnic diversity and cultural diversity is the inevitable trend. American multiculturalism not only is part of
the American history, but also become a prominent American social phenomenon. American integrated ethnic cultures have their own respective development path and characteristics. According to this, the American multiculturalism illustrates the human civilization in microcosm.
