This essay aims to analyze pragmatic functions of English abbreviations and their infiltration on Chinese. It researches the pragmatic function of English abbreviation from its definition, development and three regular rules, thus let readers own a general review of functions. In this essay, the most important point is the infiltration on Chinese. The English abbreviation in Chinese has also aroused more and more attention in China and has been the hot topic in the research area of language contact.
For the sake of making a comprehensive research on pragmatic function of English abbreviations and their infiltration on Chinese, the most difficult thing for author is to collect a large number of proper examples about English abbreviations. They should be persuasive, suitable and typical. Thus, how to search such a plentiful examples become a big trouble. Moreover, there is another inconvenient thing, which is how to analyze these examples. In order to make a thorough understanding of infiltration on Chinese, it requires the author to own enough knowledge of the English abbreviations.
In this essay, the innovative points are the applications of pragmatic functions of English abbreviations and the discussion of the infiltration on Chinese. Even though some scholars advance that English abbreviations plays an important role in Chinese. However, fewer scholars summarize the infiltration on Chinese. Even some of them who apply this theory just do research on other sides, such as abbreviation instruction. So their researches are unilateral. In this essay, the author tries to combine the functions and infiltrations on Chinese with English abbreviations. With the guidance of this paper, readers can know the problem of dealing with the relationship between the infiltrations of English abbreviations.
English abbreviations are used extensively in the modern world. To study these abbreviations which have knowledge and practical nature can help us expand our knowledge and understand the new development of science and technology. It is also important for the communication between Chinese and foreign. If we learn to master the abbreviations from the form, the pronunciation rules to the writing rules, and understand its pragmatic meaning, we not only can use abbreviations correctly but also can create much-needed correct abbreviations. They will have life as long as they are simplified reasonably.
