College, university: what's the difference? We answer that this week in part three of our Foreign Student Series on American higher education.
Colleges and universities have many things in common. Both offer undergraduate degrees in the arts and sciences, for example. And both can help prepare young people to earn a living.
But many colleges do not offer graduate studies. Another difference is that universities are generally bigger. They offer more programs and do more research.
Another place of higher education, especially in technical areas, is an institute, like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Yet even an institute of technology can offer a wide choice of programs and activities. M.I.T. says that seventy-five percent of freshmen come there with a strong interest and involvement in the arts.
Modern universities developed from those of Europe in the Middle Ages. The word \the Latin universitas, describing a group of people organized for a common purpose.
\provide students with places to live. Usually each group was studying the same thing. So college came to mean an area of study.
The first American universities divided their studies into a number of areas and called each one a college. This is still true.

Fast food and too much TV time should not take all the blame for the weight problems. A group of researchers say that a number of aspects of modern living from lack of sleep to environmental chemicals and to living with air conditioning ——may be closely related to the weight problems of many people.
Lack of sleep is one of factors. Research in animals and humans suggest that a lack of sleep over a long time can increase appetite. Studies also show that many adults and children are sleeping less than they used to. In recent decades, adults have gone from sleeping for all average of nine hours to about seven hours.
There is also evidence that industrial chemicals may increase body fat. These chemicals, which are used in products, change hormonal activity when they get into the body. Studies suggest that people have been getting more and more of these chemicals through the food chain in recent decades.
Another factor that may be making people overweight is air conditioning. The body burns calories when forced to eat less in hot and wet weather, but air conditioning makes it unnecessary for the body to make any adjustment.
Researchers also list other possible risk factors for overweight , including more older mothers, whose children may become overweight more easily; a number of medicines which can lead to weight gain; and fewer people who smoke, since people often gain weight when they stop smoking because nicotine can make people eat less.
No one is suggesting that people should stop working and sleep more, or keep smoking. When it comes to

Passage 15
Forty-three years seems like a long time to remember the name of a mere acquaintance．I have forgotten the
name of an old lady, who was a customer on the paper route in my home town when I was a twelve-year-old
boy．Yet it dwells in my memory that she taught me a lesson in forgiveness that I shall never forget．
On a winter afternoon, a friend and I were throwing stones onto the slanted roof of the old lady's house
from a spot near her backyard．The object of our play was to observe how the stones changed to missiles as they rolled to the roof’s edge and shot out into the yard like comets(彗星) falling from the sky．I found myself a perfectly smooth rock and threw it out．The stone was too smooth, however, so it slipped from my hand as I let it go and headed straight not for the roof but for a small window on the old lady's back porch．At the sound of fractured glass, we knew we were in trouble．We turned around and ran faster than any of our missiles flew off her roof．
I was too scared about getting caught that first night to be concerned about the old lady with the broken
window in winter．However, a few days later, when I was sure that I hadn't been discovered, I started to feel guilty for her misfortune．She still greeted me with a smile each day when I gave her the paper, but I was no longer able to act comfortable in her presence．
I made up my mind that I would save my paper delivery money, and in three weeks I had the seven dollars
that I calculated would cover the cost of her window．I put the money in an envelope with a note explaining that I was sorry for breaking her window and hoped that the seven dollars would cover the cost for repairing it．
I waited until it was dark, snuck up to the old lady's house, and put the letter I didn't sign through the letter
slot in her door．My soul felt redeemed and I could have the freedom of, once again, looking straight into the old lady's kind eyes．
The next day, I handed the old lady her paper and was able to return the warm smile that I was receiving

(Reuters) — At least 115 miners were pulled alive from a flooded coal mine in north China after being trapped for over a week, eating bark to survive, prompting extremely happy officials to hail their survival a miracle. Officials said 153 miners were trapped in the unfinished Wangjialing mine, belonging to two of China's larger state-owned firms in Xiangning, Shanxi Province, after water gushed (喷, 涌) into the shafts last Sunday. Late on Sunday night and throughout Monday, the survivors were pulled out from a platform, where the rescuers had drilled a vertical hole to ensure oxygen in the water-flooded pit and send down bags of glucose (葡萄糖). Thirty-eight miners were still missing.
\firmly determined down the mine shaft, passing through eight days and eight nights to live.\The workers also survived by eating bark from pine wood used in building the mines, Chinese television said.
The government had succeeded in encouraging thousands of rescue workers to pump out water and search for the miners. After that, the water level dropped low enough for rescue workers to enter the shaft.
It was rare good news in China's dangerous coal-mining industry, the deadliest in the world with thousands killed every year in floods, explosions, collapses and other accidents. Shanxi Province is the heartland of that industry.
Strong demand for energy and not strict safety standards have made China's mines often deadly places to work, despite a government drive to clamp down on (对……进行压制或取缔) small, unsafe operations where most accidents occur.
Workers are tempted into (被诱惑去) the mines by wages that can be much higher than for many other jobs open to blue-collar workers and rural migrants.

Andy rode slowly on his way to school, day-dreaming about the fishing trip that his father had promised him. He was so busy dreaming about all the fish he would catch that he was unaware of everything else around him. He rode along until a strange sound drew him to the present. He came to a stop and looked curiously up to the heavens. What he saw shocked and terrified him. A huge swarm（蜂群） of bees filled the sky like a black cloud and the buzzing mass seemed to be heading angrily towards him.
With no time to waste, Andy sped off in the opposite direction, riding furiously（狂地）—but without knowing how to escape the swarm. With a rapidly beating heart and his legs pumping furiously, he sped down the rough road. As the bees came closer, his panic increased. Andy knew that he was sensitive to bee stings(蜇). The last sting had landed him in hospital—and that was only one bee sting! He had been forced to stay in bed for two whole days. Suddenly, his father’s words came to him. ―When you are in a tight situation, don’t panic. Use your brain and think your way out of it.‖
A week later, when riding home, he could see smoke waving slowly skywards from the chimney of the Nelson family home on a nearby hill. ―Bees don’t like smoke,‖ he thought, ―They couldn’t get into the house.‖ Just then a swarm of bees appeared. Andy raced towards the Nelson house, but the bees were gaining ground. Andy knew he could not reach the house in time. He estimated that the bees would catch up with him soon.
Suddenly, out of the corner of his eyes, he spotted a small dam used by Mr. Nelson to irrigate his vegetable garden. Off his bike and into the cool water he lived, disappearing below the surface and away from the savage insects. After holding his breath for as long as he could, Andy came up for air and noticed the bees had gone. Dragging himself out of the dam, he struggled up the hilly slope and rang the doorbell. Mrs. Nelson took him inside and rang his mother.
―You’ll really need that fishing break to help you recover,‖ laughed his mother with relief. ―Thank goodness you didn’t panic!‖ But Andy did not hear her.
