While many young people think that anybody over the age of 50 is old and has nothing to contribute, it’s important to realize just how much this age group has to offer.

In the 1940s, my grandmother was a teacher who needed to return to get a full qualification. It meant being away from home for nearly a year ---- and who would take care of her young daughter? My great-grandmother stepped in to help, and my mother was brought up by her while my grandmother studied. Without the support of the great old lady, none of this would have been possible.

In China, the elderly often take a major role in child-care, letting the younger generation concentrate on their demanding jobs and supporting the whole family.

China has a rapidly aging population. The proportion of people over the age of 60 is expected to reach 31% by 2050. With improvements in healthcare and living conditions, this group will live longer, and be fully able to contribute to society in many different ways.

At Shanghai Expo next year, for example, there will be tremendous demand for volunteers can commit to help for 6 months from May till October 2010. Older people with time to offer will be absolutely invaluable.

The elderly can also contribute through their creative abilities. A troupe of elderly dancers from Hebei Province called ―Qiao Xiyang‖ performed so well at a CCTV gala that they won first prize in a worldwide vote for the best dance show.

Charity work is another way older people make contributions. When my brother-in-law retired from his job in UK, he decided to travel the world and help people in need. He was in Thailand soon after the tsunami in 2004, and worked as a volunteer helping to rebuild homes and schools destroyed by the disaster.

All of the above shows that old age should be seen as an excellent opportunity, and those entering their ―sunset years‖, could really be creating a new golden age.

Passage 19

Planting trees around poultry farms can improve air and water quality – and relations with neighbors. Research has shown that just three rows of trees near poultry houses can reduce the release of dust and ammonia (氨). They can also reduce the strong odor of ammonia gas.

The trees take dust, ammonia and odors in their leaves. They also provide shade from the sun, so they reduce cooling costs in summer. And they act as a windbreak, so they reduce heating costs in winter. Trees can also improve water quality around farms by removing pollutions from soil and groundwater.

Several years ago, people were objecting to the odor of poultry farms on the Delmarva Peninsula in the eastern United States. Delmarva is where the states of Delaware, Maryland and Virginia come together. Two thousand farms there can each house and average of seventy – five thousand chickens.

Traditionally the farms used windows to provide fresh air in the chicken houses. Farmers rarely planted trees or tall crops around the buildings, so there would be no barrier to the airflow.

But then farms began to use new ventilation systems. Instead of windows, the new systems used tunnel fans to circulate air. The fans directed airflow from the poultry houses toward the homes of neighbors.

Researchers began dealing with the problem in 2000. They found that over a period of six years, planting three rows of trees reduced total dust and ammonia by more than half. And they found that smells were reduced by 18%.

Farmers may think trees will take too long to grow and be effective. But some trees can grow quickly. At least one – third of the Delmarva farms have planted trees, technically known as vegetative environmental buffers. Passage 20

Jonhn Irving Bentley was a Pennsylvanian physician who was found burned to death in his bathroom in December 1966. Many people were burned to death, but Bentley’s case was very different from others’ because he didn’t die in a house fire. Dr Bentley was a victim of spontaneous human combustion (人体自燃).

Dr Bentley was last seen alive on December 4th, 1966. Some friends had been visiting him and they didn’t leave his home until about 9 o’clock in the evening. The following morning a meter reader(抄表员) named Don Gosnell arrived at Bentley’s home and let himself in. Gosnell headed straight for the basement where the meter was kept. While he was down in the basement, Gosnell became aware of some strange smell and he also noticed the presence of some light blue smoke. Naturally, the meter reader was curious about this and he went upstairs.

Gosnel found more smoke in the bedroom and an inspection of the bathroom revealed Bentley’s fate. All that remained of him was the lower half of his right leg. Bentley’s foot was still inside his slipper. The rest of Bentley’s body had been reduced to ashes, some of which were on the floor of the bathroom, while the rest of them were down in the basement because the heat from the blazing body had burned a hole in the floor.

At the time it was thought that Dr Bentley might have set himself on fire with his pipe. This theory was dismissed soon because the Bentley’s pipe was found on its stand beside his bed in the next room.

Nobody has ever been able to offer a satisfactory explanation for what happened to Dr Bentley. He was just one of many victims throughout the years, whose death is a mystery and may always be so. 1.When did the accident happen? (no more than 4 words)

Remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything—all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure—these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart. About a year ago. I was diagnosed with cancer. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor’s code for preparing to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you’d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes. I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had the surgery and the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. And I’m fine now. This was the closes I’ve been to facing death, and I hope it’s the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept: No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don’t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life’s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.

There are practical reasons for the mid-20s dividing line, and most of them boil down to(总结) two points: education and money.

It turns out that the more years of higher education a woman has under her belt on her wedding day, the lower the chances that she’ll get divorced ... and by 25, you’re more likely to have earned a degree or two. Educated women tend to be more confident about who they are and less willing to settle for a man who doesn't meet their standards.

At 25, you’ve had time for some crucial life experiences, including a relationship or two that may have improved your Mr. Right radar. You’ve probably dated enough to have a better idea of what you don't want in a man, which makes it easier to know what you can live with and can’t live without.

Perhaps the most important aspect of waiting is that you’ll know what your goals and values really are. While you don’t want to marry someone just like you, marriage is a lot easier if you two share a similar outlook on life. Twenty-four and already married to the man of your dreams?
