Passage4

―The Internet is re-drawing the media landscape and will continue to do so for decades to come, but traditional media will not be left out of the picture‖, argue two journalism professors from University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa. Ed Mullins, chairman of the Journalism Department, and Jim Stovall, the founder of Dateline Alabama, the news website of the College of Communication and Information Sciences, agree that the future of the web is still a mystery, but in the near future, it will serve more as a helpmate to traditional media.

―Nobody knows where the Web is taking us, but when it comes to journalism, old media will be dominant players in the new media game,‖ Mullins believes. ―Some rating services report that most Americans go to sites operated by old-line media when looking for news on the web.‖

Just as national old media dominate the Web at that level, local old media run mostly by newspapers and, to a lesser degree, by television stations dominate those markets. Is there a pattern here? Mullins and Stovall suggest that ―At least in the first decade of the Web, newspaper companies dominate Web journalism, because they specialize in news, and that gives them an advantage. Most readers browse through the websites for news and e-mail, a form of person-to-person news, especially in the form of chatting.‖

The reason for newspapers’ dominance in web journalism, Stovall points out, is that they have the biggest investment in news. ―The Birmingham News, for example, with about 175 positions, has more journalists on its payroll than all of the state’s broadcast, cable, and Web-only entities combined.‖ 56. The following proves that old media still dominate Web journalism except_____________. A. people prefer traditional media when looking for news

B. old media have the most important position in local markets C. newspaper companies have more control in Web journalism D. few people go to websites to get news

A. Internet Won’t Eliminate Print Media. B. Internet Challenges Traditional Media. C. Looking For News on the Web. D. Journalism Should Be Dominated by Web. 59. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of traditional media?

26

A. Negative. B. Critical. C. Concerned. D. Optimistic. 60. What role does the Internet play in journalism according to paragraph 1?

A. It dominates the media market. B. It is likely to threaten the future of traditional media. C. It becomes a helpful partner of print media. D. It revolutionizes journalism.

Part IV Writing (20 points)

2) 人类在环境保护方面已取得很大的进步 3) 仍然采取更多措施解决这一问题

Part V Choose the TWO passages and translate them into Chinese ( 20 points )

Passage 1

Journal and antifriction bearings are the two general types of bearings in existence.Journal bearings operate with sliding contact, whereas antifriction bearings operate under predominantly rolling contact. The amount of sliding friction in journal bearings depends on the surface finishes, materials, sliding velocities, and type of lubricant used. The principal motion-retarding effect in antifriction bearings is called rolling resistance rather than rolling friction. This is so because the resistance to motion is essentially due to the deformation of the rolling elements and, hence,is not a sliding phenomenon. Passage 2

Advantages of belt drive are:They are simple. They are economical. Parallel shafts are not required.Overload and jam protection are provided.Noise and vibration are damped out.Machinery life is prolonged because load fluctuations are cushioned (shock-absorbed). They are lubrication-free. They require only low maintenance. They are highly efficient (90~98%,usually 95%).Some misalignment is tolerable. They are very economical when shafts are separated by large distances. Clutch action may be obtained by relieving belt tension. Variable speeds may bee conomically obtained by step or tapered pulleys. Passage 3

Mechanical properties are measures of how materials behave under applied loads.Another way of saying this is how strong is a metal when it comes in contact with one or more forces. If you know the strength properties of a metal, you can build a structure that is safe and sound. Hence strength is the ability of a metal to withstand loads (forces) without breaking down.

Strength properties are commonly referred to as tensile strength, bending strength, compressive strength, torsional strength, shear strength, fatigue strength and impact strength.

Passage 4

Engineering drawing is a graphical language used by engineers and other technical personnel associated with the engineering profession. The purpose of engineering drawing is to convey graphically the ideas and information necessary for the construction or analysis of machines ,structures,or systems. In colleges and universities, engineering drawing is usually treated in courses with titles like Engineering

27

Graphics.Sometimes these courses include other topics, such as computer graphics and nomography. Passage 5

The steel & slag calculation determines the weight and composition of the steel and slag based on the materials that are charged into the furnace of just prepared or foreseen to be charged. During the EAF process the steel & slag calculation is started whenever materials charging, or injection, or o2-blowing are started into the furnace, beginning with the first scrap basket. Now the calculation is always based on the current condition of steel and slag in the and on the materials that have actually been charged under consideration of all possible chemical reactions during whole process.

Passage 6

Ohmmeter is used to measure resistance. Batteries located in the meter case furnish the power for its operation.

It is very important to be sure that the circuit or component is disconnected from its regular power source before connecting the meter. Connecting an ohmmeter to a circuit which has not been deenergized can result in damage to the meter and possible injury to the user.

The ohmmeter scale is designed to be read in the direction opposite to other meters. When the meter circuit is open the indicating needle should point to infinity. The needle can be aligned with the infinity mark by turning the adjustment screw

Passage 7

Alloy Steels:Plain carbon steels are made up primarily of iron and carbon, while alloy steels include these same elements with many other elemental additions. The purpose of alloying steel is either to enhance the material’s physical properties or its ultimate manufacturability. The physical property enhancements include improved toughness-tensile strength, hardenability,(the relative ease with which a higher hardness level can be attained) , ductility and wear resistance. The use of alloying elements can alter the final grain size of a heat-treated steel, which often results in a lower machinability rating of the final product. The primary types of alloyed steel are:nickel, chromium, manganese, vanadium, molybdenum, chrome-nickel, chrome-vanadium, chrome-molybdenum, and nickel-molybdenum. Passage 8

The three main types of arc welding processes used today are shielded meta1-arc welding, gas tungsten-arc welding, and gas metal-arc welding.Shielded metal-arc welders perform their skill by first striking an arc at the starting point of a weld and maintaining this electric arc to fuse the metal joints. The molten metal from the tip of the electrode is then deposited in the joint, together with the molten metal of the edges, and solidifies to form a sound and uniform connection. The arc welding operator is expected to select the proper electrodes for the job or be able to follow instructions as stated in the job specifications,to read welding symbols, and to weld any type of joint using the technique required.
