Part III Reading Comprehension (40 points) Passage1

Since we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships. One strength of the human condition is our tendency to give and receive support from one another under stressful circumstances. Social support consists of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to cope with

31

major life changes and daily hassles. People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties. Studies over a range of illnesses, from depression to heart disease, reveal that the presence of social support helps people fend off illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.

Social support cushions stress in a number of ways. First, friends, relatives, and co—workers may let us know that they value us. Our self—respect is strengthened when we feel accepted by others despite our faults and difficulties. Second, other people often provide us with information support. They help us to define and understand our problems and find solutions to them. Third, we typically find social

companionship supportive. Engaging in leisure—time activities with others helps us to meet our social needs while at the same time distracting us from our worries and troubles. Finally, other people may give us instrumental support-financial aid, material resources, and needed services-----that reduces stress by helping us resolve and cope with our problems.

41. Interpersonal relationships are important because ___________. Passage2

When companies need new employees, they usually place advertisements in newspapers in order to

attract as many applicants as possible. But many large well-know companies hire new people frequently without putting advertisement in newspapers, because they already have many resumes on file.

Therefore, it is not always best to apply only to companies that place ads in newspapers. A person looking for a job is advised to send his resume with a cover letter to a well-known company even if a position is not then open. He can follow up with a telephone call to inquire (询问) if his resume has been received and if any jobs are available. If the company has not a job at that time, he can ask them to keep his material on file and contact him in the future when something is available.

Sometimes if a company is not hiring at the time, a letter explaining that a position is not currently

32

available will be sent. If a person sends a letter and resumes to a company that is not then hiring and later sees an advertisement in the newspaper for a job with that company, he should call the company to make certain they have his material on file and will consider him for the position. So, a person has nothing to lose and everything to gain by sending in his resumes.

46. What kind of companies should a person write to in order to find a job? A. Small trading companies.

C. When companies decide to hire new people, they usually place an ad in the newspaper to attract as many people as possible.

D. A person looking for a job is advised to send his resumes with a cover letter to a well-known company even if a position is not then open.

48. If you send your resumes to a company that isn’t hiring at the time, what might the company do? A. The company might write back and tell you that there is no position available at that time. B. The company would not write back because it was not interested in you. C. The company would probably hire you anyway.

Passage3

Glass

For thousands of years, people thought of glass as something beautiful to look at. Only recently have they come to think of it as something to look through. Stores display their goods in large glass windows. Glass bottles that hold food and drink allow us to see the contents. Glass is used to make spectacles (眼镜), microscopes, telescopes(望远镜), and many other extremely useful and necessary objects.

Until the Second World War, most of the glass used for optical(光学的) instruments was imported from Europe. However, during the war Americans could not get European glass, and they were forced to make their own. As a result, new kinds of glass were developed that had been unknown before. These new effects were achieved by mixing other chemical elements with the sand. Some of these new glasses are very strong and can resist many kinds of shocks. According to a legend, a very hard glass was invented by a Roman who showed his discovery to the Emperor. When the Emperor saw the glass he feared that it would become more valuable than gold and silver, making his treasure worthless. Therefore, he had the glassmaker killed, and the secret was not discovered again for hundreds of years.

In the 20th century, safety glass was invented for use in modern cars and planes. Safety glass is made by placing a layer of plastic(塑料)between two layers of glass. When the outside layer of glass is broken, the pieces do not fly around and injure people. Some glass of this type is strong enough to resist bullets.

33

Although in recent years plastics have replaced glass under conditions where glass might be easily broken, there are new uses being developed for glass that were never imagined in the past. Perhaps the greatest advantage of glass is that its constituent parts (组成部分) are inexpensive and can be found all over the world.

51. According to the passage, glass today is regarded as ______.

A. something beautiful to look at only B. something useful in many ways C. something useless except for displaying goods D. the only thing to make bottles with 52. Why did Americans begin to make their own glass during the Second World War? A. They could not obtain it from Europe B. They refused to use European glass

C. The glass made in Europe was out of date D. Their advanced techniques encouraged them to do so 53. A legend says that when the Roman Emperor saw the hard glass ______. A. he accepted it with delight B. he gave the inventor a lot of gold C. he regarded it as worthless D. he disliked the discovery

54. All of the following concerning safety glass are discussed in the text EXCEPT ______. A. its uses B. its strength C. its structure D. its limitations 55. According to paragraph 4, which of the following is true of glass? A. Glass has been replaced by plastics

B. New uses of glass being developed will be very expensive C. The constituent parts of glass are low in price

D. The constituent parts of glass cannot be found everywhere

Passage 4

Language is something more than a system of communications; it is also a social convention社会传统, which one must observe. Improper use of language can easily interfere with your success and advancement. Conversely相反的, the proper use of language can lead to success in both business and social relations. For this, there is a well-grounded psychological reason.

Language is a set of rules agreed to and accepted by common agreement of all the speakers. There is no connection between the object ―hat‖ and the word ―hat‖ except that the word has been set apart by the English-speaking community to serve as the symbol of the object. A French-speaking community will use not ―hat‖ but chapeau to represent the object we call a hat. It is unstable in the same way that a dollar bill, or a pound note is unstable of purchasing购买 power.

If you find yourself alone in a desert you will quickly realize that the value such dollar bills shrinks to nothing, and that a canteen水壶 of water is infinitely more valuable than a handful of hundred-dollar notes. You will also find that your language is of no particular value, since there is no one to use it on.

But human beings normally do not live alone in deserts. They live in communities of their fellowmen, and in such communities symbol values come into play. The dollar bill has no value in itself; it is only a piece of paper. But it is everywhere accepted as a symbol of purchasing(购买)power. In the same way, language becomes of value because it is accepted as the symbol of thought.

Why is a forged(伪造)dollar bill not accepted, while one produced by the government presses is? This is because we know that government has the silver with which to redeem the paper note.

In language, the community has decided that certain words and forms are valid as symbol of thought and shall be accepted by all members of the community, while others, for one reason or another, are not valid. 56. What will happen if you use language in an improper way? A. You’ll achieve success
