教学内容 Pre-viewing Questions: 1. Have you ever seen any other prison movies? And what similar features are there in such movies and TV series as Brave heart, The Shawshank Redemption, and Prison Break? Make some comments on them as a warm-up. 2. Do you have any idea about how to survive in a very harsh environment such as prison? Maybe you will have some idea after watching this movie. Plot Summary The story begins with the trial of a young banker, Andy Dufrense, who victimized by circumstantial evidence. The Shawshank, which enjails lots of people. They have been in the prison for tens of years ,so they won‘t go abroad. Because they won‘t and also they can‘t. they lived here for years without hope, and they lived just in the small prison, where nobody knows what is their dream, what‘s their hope. Like the old man said: Some birds aren't meant to be caged, but most birds will choose to stand it. They tried too many times but they never finish it, so they gave up. Nonetheless, Andy tried. He has the bright brain ,the never fading persistent, and the most important thing----hope. Background Information A parole board is a panel of people who decide whether an offender should be released from prison on parole after serving at least a minimum portion of their sentence as prescribed by the sentencing judge. Parole boards are used in many jurisdictions, including the United Kingdom, the United States and New Zealand. A related concept is the board of pardons and paroles, which may deal with pardons and commutations as well as paroles. New words: Rehabilitate, rumor, non-lethal, miniature, pickax, quartz, mica, shale, limestone, skull, homosexual, queer, buck, inspection, snobby, stroll, flap, dissolve, warden, stunt, maestro, Mozart, tote, harmonica, cold fish, piss off 教学小结 We are expected to have a reflection on the power of hope that is one of the themes in this movie. By the way, the students may know about what a crime film as a genre is. In addition, students may learn the special meaning of some common words in legal context.

The three female movie stars on these posters are: 1) The 1St one is Rita Hayworth (丽塔·海华丝)，who is a movie and dancing star in the 1940‘s and 1950‘s in Hollywood, noted for her sexiness. She appears in the movie entitled Gilda (《吉尔达》)，which showed in the Shawshank prison. 2) The 2nd one is Marilyn Monroe (玛丽·莲梦露)，who is the most sexy and famous female movie star in America and the world. This photo is from the movie The Seven Year Itch (《七年之痒》). 3) The 3rd one is Raquel Welch (拉寇儿·韦尔奇)，on the poster of One Million Years B.C. ( 《公元前一百万年》)， which was on show for public a few months after Andy got out of the Shawshank Prison. 教学小结 There are several themes in The Shawshank Redemption: courage, loyalty, the power of the mind vs. the power of authority, institutionalization, corruption, justice or injustice, freedom and hope. The film tells us that a man can live once only, but if he keeps faith, keeps hope and works his life right, then once is enough. 34
