Cultural Background Information: Global warming is an increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere, especially a sustained increase sufficient to cause climatic change. Global surface temperature increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) between the start and the end of the last century. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Fourth Assessment Report, \temperatures since the mid-20th century is very likely due to the observed increase in human greenhouse gas concentrations\ In 2007 the IPCC forecasted that by 2100 global average surface temperatures would increase 3.2 – 7.2 °F (1.8 – 4.0 °C). Many scientists predict that the increase in temperature would cause polar ice caps and mountain glaciers to melt rapidly, significantly raising the levels of coastal waters, and would produce new patterns and

extremes of drought and rainfall, seriously disrupting food production in certain regions. The uncertainty in this estimate arises from the use of models with differing sensitivity to greenhouse gas concentrations and the use of differing estimates of future greenhouse gas emissions. To reduce the risk of large changes in future climate, many countries have implemented policies to reduce their further emissions of greenhouse gases. United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC or FCCC) is an international environmental treaty produced at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), informally known as the Earth Summit, held in Rio de Janeiro from 3 to 14 June 1992. The objective of the treaty is to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere at a level that would prevent dangerous anthropogenic interference with the climate system. Leading Actor: Dennis Quaid Date of birth: 9 April 1954 Place of birth: Houston, Texas, USA Birth Name: Dennis William Quaid Dennis Quaid, an American actor, became known during the 1980s after he appeared in several successful films. Quaid began acting in high school, and enrolled in a drama program in University of Houston. After his brother Randy Quaid was nominated for an Academy Award, Quaid dropped out before completing his studies and moved to Los Angeles, California, to pursue an acting career of his own. At the age of 20, Quaid went to Hollywood and made his debut in 1977. But Quaid didn‘t gain attention until 1979, when he starred in Breaking Away (1979) and in the commercially successful Jaws 3-D (1983). It was for his role as astronaut Gordo Cooper in The Right Stuff (1983) that he earned good reviews and got his Hollywood breakthrough. He also received acclaim for his roles in The Big Easy (1987), Suspect (1987), Great Balls of Fire! (1989), Come See the Paradise (1990), and Postcards From the Edge (1990). These films typically focus on the characters' efforts to avert, escape or cope with the disaster and its aftermath.
