How People Spent Their Holidays

As can be seen from the tablem, the past decades have witnessed dramatic changes in the way people spent their holiday between 1990 and 2000. In 1990, 63% of people spent their holidays at home while the figure dropped considerably to 24% in 2000. It is obvious from the table that people tended to be more and more mobile, and they wanted to get entertainment in the outside world.

What contributed to these changes? I think the reasons are as follows. To start with, with the rapid development of economy, people earn by far more money than they used to. Thus, people are able to afford traveling expenses. Secondly, people think it important to get well-informed about the outside world in this new era when everything is on the move. Traveling, of course, is a sure way to achieve this goal. What’s more, in this competitive society, people are usually under great stress. However, it is not difficult to find traveling an effective way to relieve people’s stress and get relaxation. Last but not least, by traveling outside, people are close to nature, which is not only beneficial to both their health and peace of mind.

In conclusion, people prefer to go traveling rather than stay at home during holidays for a combination of reasons. Moreover, it seems that this trend will last in the foreseeable future. 模板(二)

The Average Life Expectancy in China

As can be seen from the table, great changes have taken place in the average life expectancy in the past few decades. Since liberation, the average life expectancy in China has been increasing year by year. In 1950, the average life expectancy was only 62.9 while it jumped amazingly to 77.2 in 2000.

Why are there such great changes? There are, I think, various reasons responsible for this instance, and the following are the typical ones. Firstly, important advances in medicine and health care have been made in the past, which, of course, helps cure some diseases which used to be incurable and promote disease prevention, thus greatly decreasing the number of death caused by diseases. Furthermore, with the improvement of people’s living standards, people’s diets tend to

32

become better balanced, which is also of great benefit to their health. In addition, people attach more importance to their health and they often go to health spas to keep fit, which is partly conducive to a longer life expectancy.

Anyway, with the development of science and technology, people will enjoy a much longer life in the future. 模板(三)

Fire Causes in China

Fire is one of the most terrible killers in the world, which is reported to have claimed numerous lives and done a lot of damage. This is also the case with China. What has caused fire? It is apparent from the bar chart above that careless smokers, defictive insulation and children playing with matches are the three major fire causes.

Smokers are the biggest cause of all, which accounts for 50% of the fires. Another major factor is children playing with matches, which is responsible for approximately 35% of the fire incidents. Another l2.5% of the fires result from defective insulation.

Now that fire has done that considerable damage, it is high time that measures was taken to prevent fire. As far as I am concerned, there are several ways to count on. In this first place, public awareness should be inspired that smokers should be extremely careful about the cigarette ends. They are not supposed to smoke where it is easy to catch fire. When they do smoke, they should see to it that the cigarette ends are put out. In the second place, a closer eye should be kept on children and they might be warned of the danger of playing with matches. Sure, matches should be kept beyond their reach. In addition, the government may urge that such premises as companies, department stores and recreation centers should be equipped with adequate fire protection, thus minimizing the damage caused by fire. Meanwhile, staff should be trained to operate fire extinguishers properly in case of emergency.

On the whole, it is indispensable that everybody should realize the importance of preventing fire.

Income Sources Between Chinese Students and American Students

As demonstrated in the table, income sources of Chinese students are quite different from those of American students. In China, students get 90% of their money from their patents. In addition, Chinese students earn only 5% of their money from part-time jobs and 5% from fellowship or scholarship while income from these two resources for American students takes up 35% and 15% respectively of their total income.

What has led to these differences? I think there are presumably four reasons for these differences. First, by virtue of different social and family values, Chinese students tend to form a habit of asking for money from their parents whereas American students are inclined to develop more of a sense of being financially independent. Second, most Chinese parents devote too much care to their children, even sacrificing themselves for their children, as a result of which they would rather save up to afford their children’s education than encourage them to hold part-time jobs. By contrast, in America, many parents pay more attention to cultivating their kids’ capability of coping with problems on their own. Therefore, they encourage their children to find part time jobs to earn some money by themselves. Third, since America is more developed than China, it is relatively easy for students to find part-time jobs. In China, such opportunities are rather rare. Finally, it is more often than not the case in Chinese universities that they do not provide sufficient scholarship

33

to afford their expenses. On the contrary, it is quite a different story in America.

However, Chinese students will come to realize and pay more attention to the necessity of self-dependence. In addition, more and more opportunities will be provided for them to hold part-time jobs. So more students will go out of the ivory tower to broaden their knowledge and to become the master of their own lives. 模板(五)

Means of Communication of College Students

Nowadays, an increasing number of means of communication are available, especially to us college students, with the rapid development of science and technology. As can be seen in the chart, on the top of the three main means of communication is phone-call, which takes up something like 45%. E-mail is rated second, accounting for approximately 40%. At the bottom is, not surprisingly, letter-writing, which occupies a little higher than 15%.

It is not strange that college students prefer to contact each other by phone-call, as it is rather fast, convenient, and above all, direct. Hearing what your lover, your friend or your family say makes you feel intimacy and warmth. However, it is by far the most luxurious means of communication.

When it comes to communicating with each other by e-mail, some students claim that it is also quite convenient and prompt. It may merely take a few seconds to reach your contact. But as far as intimacy is concerned, e-mail fails to fulfill this goal because a lot of e-mail is Ccs.

Despite the fact that letter-writing, which is sometimes called “snail-mail”, is a slow process, and that it usually takes at least several days to reach your contact, some students still think that this means should never be totally rejected. They hold that letters are something that is amiable, enjoyable and familiar. What’s more, letters are enduring which can be cherished for good and reread whenever you want to.

For all the advantages of e-mail and phone-call, I still prefer letter-writing. Maybe it is because I am rather conventional that I cling to this somewhat traditional way.
