Q: Thank you for your self-introduction. As an excellent college student, please tell the criteria for excellent overall performance?

A: I think that the qualities required for an excellent college student

include noble character, intelligence, teamwork spirit and enthusiasm. Every excellent student must keep fit, study well and work hard; every excellent student should have a broad education in addition to specializing in a particular field; also, it’s important for an excellent student to be intelligent, hardworking and motivated to succeed. Without such kinds of qualities and factors, a man will not achieve his full potential.

Q: Would you please tell us what sort of qualities you’d look for in your

future work if you are employed?

A: I need to be pretty hard working. Also, I should work effectively

as team members do while maintaining the ability to initiate and manage projects independently. I think personnel qualities are very important for everyone to do every job. International buyers or sellers rarely work in isolation. They must learn how to get along with others on a daily basis and how to cope with the good and poor facets of human relations in work.

Q: You told us that you were fond of movies in the original. Why?

A. The most important role of a movie is to bridge the cultural

differences between East and West. When I am watching a movie, I am enjoying myself and learning about a new culture. From motion pictures in the original I learn about history and the world, and understand human nature and life through the growth and fate of movie characters. For instance, in Gone with the Wind I see the struggles of Scarlet O’Hara, and the making of a nation during the Civil War;in Waterloo Bridge I witness the sins and cruelties of war, and the unfairness of the British class system. Literature and art promote my understanding of cultures and values of the Western countries. Original English movies also improve my English level. Learning English through movies

makes the learning process natural, effective and enjoyable.

Q: Do you like watching TV programs?

A: I have no much time spending on TV, but I never miss fantastic

programs. “Yu Dan’s Notes on The Analects of Confucius” rounds out my character; “The Rising of The Big Powers” broadens my horizons.

Q: Look at this set of pictures and tell us what you see and what you think about it.

The Size Doesn’t Matter

A: The sea is larger than the land. The sky is larger than the sea.

Larger than all is your heart. Indeed, the size doesn’t matter. A heart is a world. There is joy and pain in life; there is success and failure in work. In failure we should not lose hope, for failure is womb of success; in success we should not become conceited, for modesty makes one leap forward. Friendship and cooperation is the most important in work; tolerance and understanding is the most valuable in life. A college student should have a broad mind and know his limitations. No gold is pure. No man is perfect. We need kindness and assistance, mercy and forgiveness. Nothing is impossible for a willing heart. I’ll work wholeheartedly and fulfill myself in work. I believe I can overcome any difficulties ahead of me and do contributions to the company.

Q: Thank you very much. Do you have any questions to ask? A: Yes. May I know your motto?

Q: “The best of good fortune is to believe in what you are doing.” A: Thank you.

3

Q: What’s yours?

A: “Get everything ready before opportunity comes.”

Q: Good. More questions? A: No more. Thank you!

Q: You even do not ask about salary.

A: I leave it to you to decide after studying my qualifications.

I believe Motorola is fair and reasonable. “I believe in what you are doing.”

Q: Thank you very much, Miss Wu, and you’ll be hearing from us in the

next few days. Looking forward to meeting you again.

A: Thank you very much again for your interview. Good – bye!

Passage2

Interpret the following passage from English into Chinese:

Q: Harvard is one of the universities I admired most. As the President of Harvard University, would you please start with telling something about

it?

A: Harvard University was established in 1636 in Cambridge,

Massachusetts. This America's oldest college was a product of the Puritans. In 1620, the first Pilgrims sailed to the New World and settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts; In 1630, the first Puritans left England for New England to find a place where they could have a pure church developed in their own way. Unlike most other religion of that time, theirs had attracted many learned men. Of a total population of perhaps 15,000 or 20,000, there were 130 Oxford and Cambridge graduates among the settlers. These educated Puritans pressured their local government to found a school for their sons, which it did in 1636. The college was named Harvard in 1639 for its first benefactor, John Harvard, a young minister. He graduated from Cambridge University, and immigrated to America in 1637. Upon his death in 1638 he left his library and half his estate to the new institution.

During its early years, the College offered a classic academic

course based on Cambridge University model but consistent with the prevailing Puritan philosophy of the first colonists. Although many of its early graduates became ministers in Puritan congregations throughout New England, the college never formally affiliated with a specific religious denomination.

The University has grown from 9 students to an enrollment of
