4. The last and the most important round in applicant screening in

Motorola Company is an examination of the applicants' moral conduct. He who fails to meet the moral standard of the company shall not be accepted despite his professional background and enthusiasm in work. It is because Motorola stresses much on team spirit and a person of poor moral conduct will do harm to the cohesiveness and working effectiveness. However capable he may be, he cannot make up for the overall losses he has caused the company. Although a person's morality is not to be quantified, according to director of the Human Resource Department, it is still possible to be detected from diverse aspects in the interview. For instance, when an interviewee is given a question, which is obviously above him, but he pretends he knows it and continues the pretension by further nonsense after being cautioned once. People of this kind are obviously used to lying. There are still some others who, for some purpose, will conceal something, but will soon give themselves away at further inquiries.

Text for Practice

Interview with Prof. Zhang Qi, Harbin Institute of Technology

Q: WU Shouqian,

A: ZHANG Qi,

( 俄罗斯地图 )

Q: Good Morning, Prof. Zhang. You’ve just finished your research

work in St. Petersburg. I am very pleased to talk with you about Russia, and your fresh impressions and thoughts of Russia and Russian people. Now please give us a brief introduction to Russia.

A: Russia is still the largest country in the world. Russia is taking the

area of 17.1 million square kilometers - it’s like USA and Europe together and the country is 9000 kilometers from west to east and 5000 from north to south. The population is 147.5 million people and three fourths live in the European part and one fourth lives in the Asian part of Russia --- Siberia and Far East regions. Russia is often called a “bridge” between Europe and Asia, both

33

geographically and sociologically. The capital of Russia is Moscow.

Q: Russia is a beautiful country of vast landscape, vibrant life,

sharp contrasts and interesting people. What do you usually see through the clouds when you fly to Russia?

A: Visiting Russia, if you go by air, you’ll see never-ending forests and lakes, scattered among them, gleaming little churches in Moscow and impressive emperor’s palaces in St. Petersburg

Q: Both Moscow and St. Petersburg are famous in the world. I like singing the song, The Evenings of Moscow Suburb, and reading F. Dostoevsky’s stories Idiot, The White Nights, and Crime and Punishment, which are all set in foggy St. Petersburg. A: Most of Dostoevsky’s novels are set in 19th century St. Petersburg. Now you can still see the white nights in summer, but heavy fog is hardly seen there.

Q: I am interested in the 19th century Russian literature and 1950s movies.

A: In the 19th century, Romanticism permitted a flowering of especially poetic talent, Pushikin came to the fore, followed by Lermontov.

Q: I like Pushikin’s poem and poetic novels Eugene Onegin and The Captain’s daughter.

A: Nineteen-century developments included Ivan Krylov, the fabulist; non-fiction writer Belinsky; playwrite Ostrovsky; Poet Nekrasov, and novelists such as Nikolai Gogol, Lev Tolstov and Fyordor Dostoevsky. With the approach of the 20th century Anton Chekhov excelled in writing short stories and dramas.

Q: A lot of movies are adapted from the literal classics. Among them

are Eugene Onegin and The Captain’s Daughter; Storm; Dead Soul; War and Peace, Anna Karenina; Idiot, The White Nights, and Crime and Punishment; A House with an Attic, etc.

A: Most of these literal classics were screened in the late 1950s and

1960s. After Stalin, Soviet cinema again flowered, beginning with

34

films such as The Forty - First, Ballard of a Soldier. The youth filmmakers represented their sense of independence and made new elucidation of war and human nature, the film characters became more human and the films turned much closer to life than ever.

Q: I visited former Soviet Union in 1997. Standing in front of the

Memorial to the Great Patriotic War and looking back, I cannot but feel an upsurge of emotion. I will never forget the iron will and dauntless heroism displayed by the Soviet soldiers and civilians when the Fascist troops were pressing on towards Moscow, the sacred 900 days of the battle to protect the heroic city of Leningrad, and the days and nights of the decisive Stalingrad battle which marked the significant turning point of World war II, nor will we forget the capture of Berlin and victorious joining of forces at the River Elbe. The Soviet Union fought 80 percent of the German fascist forces in the main anty- fascist war theater in Europe, which cost the Soviet Union over 27 million lives and immeasurable national wealth. Seldom has any other country or people in history ever made a sacrifice so great to win a war of national defense. The historic contribution of the Soviet people and troops will go down in history forever.

A: The 1970s Dawn Here Is Quite and the 1980s Liberation truly reflected the Great Patriotic War. It’s a pity that the new Russia’s cinema is more profit – oriented, with artistic needs taking a backseat to more immediate desires. Much low-quality action, comedy, and pornography has been filmed. Very few films of note have been created for over a decade. This included Burnt by the Sun.

Q: Now please tell me something about your fresh impressions of

Russian people.

A: Russians are emotional, but somehow it’s all kept inside most of

the time and they might seem a bit cold and to themselves at first, until you know them better. Women and old women are very respected here. It’s considered polite if while being in the metro and seeing a woman or an old woman coming in and there’re no free seats, man offers her his seat. The old women are active, pushy, and very proud of themselves, so if you do something not the way
