In English, restrictive attributive clauses modifying central words are closely
connected to central words in meaning and should be placed behind of central words.
Omitting such clauses will destroy the completeness of the whole sentence. In this
case, attributives should be placed in front of the central words of Chinese sentences.
For example,
The bicycle I bought last month is lost.
Translated version: 我上个月买的那辆自行车丢了。
The advice my teacher gave me was quite helpful.
Translated version: 老师给我的建议对我很有帮助。
In English, non-restrictive attributive clauses modifying central words have
little connection with central words in meaning. Omitting such clauses will not
destroy the completeness of the whole sentence. In this case, attributives can be
translated into simple sentences and placed behind of central words of Chinese
sentences. For example,
The novel A Farewell to Arms is written by Earnest Hemingway, who committed suicide at the age of 62.
Translated version: 小说《永别了武器》的作者是海明威,他在62岁时自
杀身亡。
In Chinese, if attributes are word groups or attributes not closely connecting
with each other in meaning, they have to be translated and placed behind of central
words. E.g.
怀里抱着婴儿的那位老妇人曾是抗击侵略者的英雄。
Translated version 1: The old woman with a baby in her arms was a heroine in the battles against the invaders.
Translated version 2: The old woman who had a baby in her arms was a heroine in the battles against the invader.
擅长电脑的职员将更会受到老板的重视。
Translated version 1: The staff good at computer will find favor with our boss. Translated version 2: The staff who are good at computer will find favor with
