changed arbitrarily. Word order not only is of grammatical function, but also conveys
meaning and information. It shows the relationship between word groups, and reflects
the locutionary meaning of text on the syntactic level. Therefore, comparing order
word is of vital importance in C-E and E-C translation process.
Word order, which gives various linguistic units fixed orders in a sentence,
conveys connotative meaning and useful information a speaker or an author wants to
express. Generally speaking, all linguistic units, basic components of sentences, have
to follow certain principles to fulfill their functions.
The first function of word order is to present grammatical relationships of the
linguistic units in a sentence by deciding their places.
The second function of word order is to emphasize the most important part of a
sentence which is of indicative meaning or contains more useful information. Such
emphasis can be realized by changing the word order, that is to put words in unusual
positions , which are different from normal positions in a sentence.
The third function of word order is to express continuity of thought in sentences.
This continuity is often supported by pronouns and adverbs.
2. The differences between English and Chinese word order
In this part of the thesis, the author points out that thinking pattern is the root of
different word order, and analyzes how different thinking patterns influence Chinese
and English word order. The following also gives a general introduction to the
